Mandriva Linux 2010 is shipped with 4 distinctive new themes (or flavours): Free, One, Powerpack and Flash. Each theme will be installed based on the Mandriva edition you are installing, but if you want you can easily use the other themes by installing the corresponding mandriva-theme-<flavour_name> packages.

Under GNOME and KDE environment, the wallpaper will change depending on the hour of the day: if you look carefully you will notice that some subtle changes will occur as the daytime goes by.

Mandriva Linux 2010 screensaver will display a slideshow of different landscapes in the world: our planet is beautiful, please do as much as possible to protect it.

Bootsplash is now managed by Plymouth: it's much more customizable, allowing nice graphical effects during system boot. Boot in video

Mandriva Linux 2010 is also the first version including photos from background contest. 11 photos from nearly 850 submitted. You can use it installing mandriva-theme-extra package.

Desktop environments

KDE 4.3

Mandriva Linux 2010 includes KDE 4.3.2 as its default KDE desktop. Several years in the making, KDE 4 is the most radical release yet of the leading Linux desktop environment. KDE 4.3.2 is an upgrade in stability and functionality over KDE 4.2. This release will add many new features to KDE 4, including some that were notably present in KDE 3 but lacking in KDE 4.0, 4.1 and 4.2, along with some brand new features. It should also provide a more stable desktop experience than KDE 4.2. Its new features are too numerous to explain in depth here, but some highlights include:

  • Data migration from KDE 3: data will be backed up and migrated to KDE 4 (user preferences, emails, ...)
  • Hourly background switch: a new plasma widget, plasma-wallpaper-timeoftheday, is now available to have hourly switch of backgrounds (in desktop configuration menu)
  • Nepomuk integration: Nepomuk technology has been further integrated. You will be able to organize your desktop depending on your projects, annotate documents, ... Complete information See a demo Boot in video
  • Amarok 2.2 final release is shipped with Mandriva 2010.0: it has many bug fixes and some of the missing features of Amarok 1.4 now are back, most notable the ability to play audio CD's!
  • Kmymoney2: it has been removed as it's much too unstable for now. It has been replaced by skrooge. You can safely export your data from kmymoney and import it in Skrooge.
  • KOffice 2.0.82 is shipped with 2010.0.
  • Digikam finally reached 1.0 beta5 release for KDE4, including new first time assistant, a new batch queue manager and many other features.

Mandriva Linux features the latest and greatest GNOME release, 2.28. Continuing the GNOME 2 tradition of releasing solid incremental updates on a regular schedule, the major improvements in GNOME 2.28 include:

  • a notable planned change will be improvements in GNOME Media with : Webcam support and Live streaming recording in sound-recorder or podcaster.

Use Alt+F2 to launch gnome-shell --replace. To remove gnome-shell effects, use again Alt+F2 and launch metacity --replace. gnome-shell status is still experimental. You may encounter problems with some chipsets.

Improved boot performance

Again we worked in Mandriva Linux 2010 to improve boot performance.

Netbook friendly

Back when Mandriva Linux 2008 was released, a certain small computer was causing a bit of a stir in the PC world - the original Asus Eee PC. We recognized it for the game-changer it was, and built 2008 Spring to be Eee-friendly - the first mainstream distribution to integrate polished support for the little, only in size, system. Now that the original Eee has given birth to a whole family of Eee models and inspired a host of netbooks from other manufacturers, Mandriva Linux 2010 is keeping pace.

2010 includes full hardware support for every currently available Eee model. All the Mandriva configuration tools have been tested and tweaked where appropriate to fit into the lower resolution screens common on netbooks, and we have also tweaked some third-party applications for this restraint. As mentioned earlier, we've included the lightweight LXDE desktop but also Moblin in the Mandriva Linux 2010 repositories with great care for netbook users.

The hybrid iso's and Mandriva Seed, the tool which can be used to easily copy the hybrid iso's to USB, make installation on these little machines a breeze. And going beyond the Eee, Mandriva Linux 2010 includes excellent out-of-the-box compatibility with other popular netbooks, such as the Acer Aspire One, MSI Wind and more. If you've got a netbook, Mandriva Linux 2010 may just be its new best friend!
