Samsung printers
Drivers
First of all, go to the Mandriva Control Centre pressing Alt+F2 and typing drakconf, go to the "Hardware" section and click on "Configure printers, etc". The printing system will be installed in case you haven't done it before. Once you have done it close that window, press Alt+F2, type rpmdrake and install "cups-drivers-splix".
Two things can happen:
First possibility
Switch on the printer. The Printers management application will detect a new printer and will install it if the driver is included in the previously installed package, so after that the printer will be ready for use. If it happens that way then you have finished installing your printer, otherwise go on reading.
Second possibility
If the driver is not included in the "splix" package you must go to the Samsung site and download Unified Driver for Linux. To find it search for your printer model, go to the Download centre and click on Drivers. The name of the file is UnifiedLinuxDriver_0.86.tar.gz or something similar.
Now open Dolphin and go to the folder in which you downloaded the file, right click on the file and click on Extract archive here, auto-detect folder. The folder "cdroot" is created and you have to get into it. Once there press F4 to open Konsole inside Dolphin in this folder. Log in as root typing su and your root password and then type ./autorun. A wizard will appear.
Follow the instructions in this wizard pressing Next after each step. I disabled LPT printers support as it is said to be recommended. I also set my user to be able to manage printers checking it in the right step, although I'm not sure if this is needed. After this installation finishes, another wizard will appear to configure your printer, but as it won't detect anything just click in Cancel.
After that, switch your printer on, and the Mandriva's Printers management tool will detect and install your printer correctly.
SmartPanel
The Smartpanel (just to know the ink level) has only been tested with the second system, and it is not mandatory. You have to download a package named Smartpanel_0.86.tar.gz or similar, that is located in the same place that the Unified Driver in the Samsung site. To install it extract the archive (Right click and "Extract archive here, auto-detect folder") and get into the following folder just created: "cdroot/Linux/smartpanel". In that folder press F4 to open Konsole, log in as root using su and type sh install.sh. It will be installed and next time you boot your PC will appear in the systray, or run smartpanel. To uninstall it the process is the same but typing sh uninstall.sh.
