[edit] Problems with FlashPlayer plug-in for browsers
For a long time in using Mandriva and visiting websites which contained Flash Player content I noticed that the plugins were not working and the intended animation did not play in my browser (Firefox, Mozilla, Epiphany etc.). To my shame I couldn't even view the very nice websites created by my son. Often I encountered websites which said that Flash Player was not installed. All the time I knew it was: even "about:plugins" showed it was there and should work.
Recently, I finally found the cause: I had the packages swfdec-mozilla (and swfdec) installed, which are for flash versions 3 and 4, as well as the Mandriva Club commercial package FlashPlayer which is for higher versions. It occurred to me that they could be in conflict with each other. And indeed, as soon as I removed the packages swfdec-mozilla and swfdec, the flashplayer plug-in started to work.
Normally speaking there should be a so-called "conflict" embedded in the packages, so they cannot be installed at the same time. Apparently they are not. I am trying to request Mandriva Linux to create such a conflict in the packages, but until such time this warning will have to suffice.
Some additional notes:
- Some Flash Player content may work with the Konqueror browser even if all packages are installed at the same time, but I did not find it quite satisfactory and it is not my favourite browser. Your mileage may vary.
- The FlashPlayer package is a Mandriva Club package in the category "Commercial packages" and as such only available to Mandriva Club members. The software may also be downloaded from http://www.macromedia.com, but most likely that is not a Mandriva specific package. I have not attempted this, so I don't know how successful this is on any version of Mandriva.
- Note on the above: MDK/V-specific RPMs are available from Macromedia, and the source can be set up to work with urpmi. See this page for RPMs and a link to urpmi instructions; choose a mirror close to you from the four available ones, if setting up a urpmi source.
- Flash Player is a product of Macromedia, Inc., but I did not see any notice that the name is a registered trademark.
