[edit] Recovering data from FAT32 partitions

A cpu fan failure left me with a great deal of hardware damage. When the system was up again I discovered that all the data in two FAT32 partitions had disappeared.

• The first tool recommended to me was Sleuthkit. However, this is a low-level forensic tool, designed to simply pick up strings, and is no use at all if you need to resurrect the file.
• With fatback I managed to recover just about every file from one partition, in many formats. The other partition, however, contained only graphics files, and fatback failed to recover them.
• There are many tools available on the web for jpeg recovery. Most of them run in Windows. Despite all my efforts, all the jpg files were lost.
