The K3b burning software

Burn a CD or DVD under Linux can be done in command line but also with burning software. There are several and K3b is one of them. This software, which the author has been financially supported by Mandriva is very powerful since it can burn both data disk, qu'audio or video but also DVD. The latest versions add convenient features.

To access this program click on the menu (or press the windows key on your keyboard) and choose Tools → Burning CD and finally click K3b or use the command K3b.

User interface

K3b was thought to be an easy to use, its interface is so intuitive means. We find typically a menu bar with menus File, Project, Device, Tools, System, Help. Under this menu there are first some icons that allow quick access to functions of K3b found with the menu, then an explorer tree.

Three screens are arranged in the window.

1: screen showing the tree and to navigate directories.
2: screen showing the contents of the tree, allowing the display of files in a directory.
3: allowing quick access to four projects create an audio CD, Create a data CD, Create a data DVD and Copy CD, choose Stocks Futures containing all the project possibilities offered by K3b. This screen will then present the structure of the CD or DVD to burn depending on the project selected, while leaving the initial screen accessible via a tab.

Before turning to the details for setting up separate CD or DVD, a few explanations about adding files. K3b can add files and folders in several ways (with the mouse using the keyboard or using the menu). Whatever the method of adding it should select the files or directories. The selection of files to add is exclusively in the screen 2, cons by selecting a directory can be the screen 1 or screen 2. Once the selection made you will be able to add the project under way:

  • Moving the selection to the screen 3
  • Clicking on the selection of the right mouse and choose Add to project in the menu
  • Simultaneously pressing the Shift and Insert

Note also that it is possible to launch a selection window by selecting Add files in the menu Project. This window lets you select files and directories. When the selection is made click on Open to validate orCancel. Therefore now turn to a review of various proposed projects.

Burning a data CD

A data CD is a CD that contains data (image files, video, word processing, spreadsheet, ...) and is intended to be read by other computers (sometimes by aircraft of 'consumer electronics) or to act as backup. There are different sizes of CDs ranging from 650 MB to 870 MB, the most common format is currently 700 MB (or 80 minutes). If you wish to make a compilation CD of songs in MP3 readable media player that plays MP3 format is what type of CD you need.

To start a data CD you simply click on New CD project data in the screen 3, or choose FileNew ProjectNew CD project data.

Screen 3 should now appear as following :

You must then add the files you want to burn by draggingin K3b data project. You can add as many files and directories. Once this step completed, you should click on the Burn button or choose Project - Burn or press 'Ctrl-B'.

A new window appears :

K3b is generally known fully configure the options to burn, you can still change them, you will find them in different tabs. You can now specify the number of burning, carry out a simulation (K3b is as if it were burning but did not realize), create an image in ISO format (while burning), just create an ISO image (and not to burn) and verify the burn. At this stage, you usually just click on Burn.

A new window will launch that centralizes information on current burn. So wait until the end of the burning process.

That's it, the disc is ejected, and K3b inform you of the success of your burn.

Burn an audio CD

K3b can also create audio CDs that can be played directly on your CD. To do this, simply click on File> New Project> New Audio CD Project. Then browse the different music files that you want included on your CD.

It is also able to convert many audio files so you can drop files. Mp3,. Ogg,. Mcf and he will take care of converting them. Wav files for the CD to be readable by any CD .

K3b also offers the option of adjusting the sound levels so that the volume of your CD is the same whatever the song is played. This possibility appears in the window just before the etching step in the Advanced tab, check Adjust sound volumes.

If he can not perform this operation on the fly, then click on Disable burning on the fly and that's it.

Burn an ISO image on a CD

When you want to install a Linux distribution, including Mandriva Linux, you can download an ISO image. To ensure everything goes well, you should not burn the ISO image as a single file but choose Tools - Burn CD image.

Thus opens a new window, similar to the following image.

You must specify here the ISO image that you want to burn. For that, click on the directory underImageand burn using File Explorer, select the ISO image that you want to burn. K3b is automatic detection of image type (there are different formats, ISO, CUE, BIN, ...) and calculates the md5sum. The following alphanumeric characters should be compared with the result that must be present on the site to download the ISO image. They must be identical, indicating that the download was successful without data corruption. You can specify the number of print and speed. It may be important to specify a recording speed not too important for an ISO image that will be used to install Mandriva or as a Live CD. Indeed, the increase in speed results in increased probability of error of burning, which can make an installation CD unusable. It is best to take his time wasting blank CDs. Click on Start to start burning.

A new window centralizes information on current burn. So wait until the end of burning process.

Note the small moving window that remains in the foreground. It can follow a glance the progress of etching. She moves easily holding the mouse button press over and moving the mouse. Finally comes the end of the burning process :

K3b tells you the success of burning at the same time it ejects the CD and it gives a summary of the progress of burning.

Burning an NRG image on a CD

K3b is not able to burn an image format *. nrg. It is therefore necessary to convert this file into a *. nrg file into a *. iso K3b knows how to use. To do this, you must install the nrg2iso package.

Once done, you can convert your *. nrg file into *. iso. In a console, set to the directory where the image to convert is located and enter the following line:

Image:Konsole.png
[user@computer ~]$ nrg2iso filename.nrg filename.iso

where filename is replaced by the name of the file to convert.

Caution !

Sometimes, he may receive the following message, after handling Previous: It seems that filename.nrg is already an ISO 9660 image. This means that the file is already in *.iso format and in this case, simply enter the command:

Image:Konsole.png
[user@computer ~]$ mv filename.nrg filename.iso

Once your image file in *.iso format, follow the previous procedure.

Burning a data DVD

The approach is identical to that which led to a data CD, with the difference that a DVD contains much more data than a CD. The steps are identical.

Monosession, multisession, DAO and TAO

A CD or DVD is divided into sessions, ie sessions in engraving. Each session includes 3 areas:

  1. The lead-in or header which contains the table of contents.
  2. Data
  3. The lead-out or end zone that ended the session

Monosession CD :

It includes a Session. The meeting Burning behaves as follows:

  • Opening of the session (lead-in)
  • Burn any data
  • Closure of the session (lead-out)
  • Close the CD

Even if the CD is not full, it is impossible to add data. This mode is required for a music CD (CD-DA). Attention CD music mp3 is a CD ROM data. To impose this mode K3B it must choose the DAO (Disk At Once disk = integer) after clicking "Burn".

Selection of the burning mode

Multisession CD :

Afficher en écriture latine It includes several sessions. Given the impossibility of changing the contents already engraved with the previous session, it is necessary for each new session to resume the contents of the previous session, to re-write complete information of the new session. To do this, click on the little blue gear wheel to the right of "Burn" button for "Import Session burn earlier in the current project.

Importing a previous session

If the CD is blank, click on the "Miscellaneous" tab and choose "Start Multisession".

Starting a multisession

The sessions are engraved in TAO (Track At Once = track by track). Closing the session is completed but not closing the disc. As long as there is space on the CD, additional sessions may be added. One session occupies a minimum of 13.5 MB, which is limited to about 50 the maximum number of sessions on a CD (but 50 sessions empty!)

TAO mode :

Considering the loss of space generated by the creation of successive sessions, it is possible to use the CD in single-session (or only 2 or 3) in TAO. In this case, the order of areas of the session is amended

  1. The data, recorded several times (99 max)
  2. The lead-in or header that contains the contents of all meetings of engraving.
  3. The lead-out or end zone that ended the session

The lead-in and lead-out being burned that at the end of the session, the CD is unreadable until the session is not terminated, except by the recorder itself. The TAO is possible for a music CD, but in one session. To activate this mode on K3B, choose the TAO (Track At Once) after clicking "Burn".

RAW mode

To save space and time to burn (but given the performance of current hardware, is it really necessary?) It is possible to choose RAW mode, which removes the bytes of error checking. It's playable for music, but beware of your data!
