LXDE

LXDE is a lightweight desktop environment that can be installed alongside your existing desktop environment, giving you the option of experimenting with LXDE, but having the safety of a desktop you know to fall back on (and a lot of that desktop's functionality available from within LXDE).

It is said that "XFCE is 200 mb and LXDE is about 30"[1] - clearly a big saving over the other major "lightweight but usable" desktop.

LXDE uses the Openbox window manager - boot options will include Openbox as well as LXDE, and Openbox alone will be even faster, but sometimes confusing, as the menu (accessible by right-clicking the desktop) is not complete, and many programs must be run from the terminal.

Since Mandriva 2011 we will have LXDE distribution, developed and maintained Community forces.

In Mandriva LXDE add more improvements and additions rather original (upstream) source code:

• LXDE components update to minor release
• pcmanfm and libfm has a testing git snapshot improverments
• in autostart add nmapplet and parcellite.
• for default add catfish for search and deadbeef for mediaplayer
• theme changes for elementary based with improverments of icons from ROSALAB and openbox theme.
• default font change for Droid Sans
• Add scort and keyboard binding for PrintScreen (all windows) and Shift + PrintScreen (Select Area)
• new GTK+ instruments - fskbsetting for keyboard layout, system-config-nfs and system-config-samba for setup, gigolo and mdvinput
• First implement gdm220 and special script first boot setup.
