Testing Candidate Updates

When an issue in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring is identified, the maintainer of the package concerned may build a package he believes will fix the bug, and upload it to a certain Mandriva software repository named /main/testing which is dedicated to testing potential fixes for such issues. This package can then be tested by users affected by the issue and by the Mandriva quality assurance team. If this testing determines that the package resolves the issue and does not cause any new ones, the package will be issued as an official update which will be provided to all Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring users via MandrivaUpdate.

If you are affected by an issue for which a candidate update package is available and you would like to help test the candidate package, you may configure your system so the Mandriva package management tools will recognize the /main/testing repository as a source of installable packages. For instructions on how to do this, please see installing and removing software (advanced use: backports and candidate updates).

There is also a /contrib/testing repository which performs the same function for packages in the /contrib section (although please note that we do not guarantee issues with /contrib packages will be fixed, the maintainers of each package may choose whether to issue updates at their own discretion). Configuring this repository is covered on the same page.

Installing Updates

Updates for packages in the /main, /non-free and /contrib sections of Mandriva Linux can be installed using Mandriva Update. You can run Mandriva Update from the Mandriva Control Center by navigating to the Software Management tab and clicking on the link labelled "Look at available updates and apply any fixes or upgrades to installed packages". Unless you disable it, you will also be notified of updates by the Mandriva Online update notification system, which displays an icon in the system tray to notify you whether updates are available.

Resolved Issues

This section contains issues that have been resolved by official updates.

kerberos utilities do not work

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30349 and update advisory MDKA-2007:026. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for krb5, the kerberos authentication protocol and supporting libraries and utilities, contained a compilation error which caused the kerberos utilities to look for modules in the wrong location (and consequently not to work correctly). An updated set of krb5 packages, 1.5.2-6.2mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on April 21st, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install these updates.

SSH does not work with protocol version 1 (and other 3des / OpenSSL-related issues)

See also update advisory MDKA-2007:027. The packages included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for openssl, a secure communications and encryption toolkit, contained a problem with the 3des cipher. Among other issues, this causes SSH connections via protocol version 1 to fail. An updated set of openssl packages, 0.9.8e-2.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on April 24th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install these updates.

This is because Mandriva now defaults to UTF-8 (Unicode) locales, but mc's translations were not encoded in UTF-8 format. An updated mc package, mc-4.6.1-6.3mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on October 8th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

mc file transfers via fish protocol result in corrupted files

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #26498 and update advisory MDKA-2007:092. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for mc, a console file manager, contains a bug which can cause file transfers via the fish protocol to result in corrupted files, depending on the server software. An updated mc package, mc-4.6.1-6.3mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on October 8th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

Initialization problems in nfs-utils

See also update advisory MDKA-2007:094. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for nfs-utils, a collection of tools for the NFS network filesystem, contains some problems in its initialization scripts which can cause various issues at boot time. A missing dependency on portmap means services start in an arbitrary order, and parallel execution of rpcidmapd and rpcgss can lead to a launch failure due to a sunrpc module loading failure. An updated nfs-utils package, nfs-utils-1.0.12-13.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on October 22nd, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

mkdosfs cannot check bad blocks when creating filesystems larger than 2GB in size

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27436 and update advisory MDKA-2007:113. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for dosfstools, containing utilities for creating and manipulating FAT filesystems, was compiled without large file support. Consequently, the mkdosfs tool cannot check for bad blocks when trying to create a filesystem larger than 2GB in size, which usually means the operation will fail. An updated dosfstools package, dosfstools-2.11-4mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on November 21st, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

SSL support missing from irssi

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #34951 and update advisory MDKA-2007:095. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for irssi, an IRC client, was built without SSL support. An updated irssi package, irssi-0.8.10-10.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on October 24th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

Some printers requiring external firmware downloads cannot be configured

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #35424 and update advisory MDKA-2007:121. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for printer-filters-utils, which includes a driver for ZjStream-based printers, contains a bug. When these printers require an external firmware file to work, Mandriva attempts to download the firmware file automatically. However, the URL for these firmware downloads was changed, causing the process to fail. An updated printer-filters-utils set of packages, printer-filters-utils-2007-9.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on November 23rd, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

Network printers not detected by printer configuration tool

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30090 and update advisory MDKA-2007:122. Prior to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, the Mandriva printer configuration tool would scan the local network for ports commonly used by printer sharing systems in order to detect network printers. In Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, this scan is only performed when the CUPS printing system is not in use: when CUPS is in use (which is the default), a less comprehensive SNMP-based search system is used. Several users reported that Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring did not detect network connected printers, while previous Mandriva Linux releases did, which suggests that the SNMP-based search is inadequate and the more comprehensive scan should still be used. An updated printerdrake package, printerdrake-1.5.7.2-2.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on November 26th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

gphpedit cannot be installed due to missing library

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #34913. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for gphpedit, a PHP-centric text editor, contained a bug which caused it to be impossible to install. On attempting to install the package, an error message would be displayed to the effect that the file libdbus-1.so.2 was required but could not be installed.

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, gphpedit-0.9.91-2mdv2007.1, was released on December 9th 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

Run-time configuration changes for top not correctly stored

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #19589 amd update advisory MDKA-2007:131. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for procps, which contains several important utilities including the top process and resource monitor, contains a bug. If a user runs top, makes a configuration change (for instance, enabling color output mode by pressing the z key) and then attempts to save that change by pressing the W key, the change is not correctly saved, and on running top again, the original configuration is used. The reason for this problem is that top generates a malformed ~/.toprc file when attempting to save configuration changes. An updated procps package, procps-3.2.7-3.1mdv2007.1, was released through the official update channels on December 18th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

checkinstall libraries incorrectly located on x86-64 architecture

The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for checkinstall, a system for tracking the installation of software compiled from soure code, installed shared library files to /usr/lib on x86-64 installations, rather than /usr/lib64 as it should.

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, checkinstall-1.6.1-3mdv2007.1, was released on April 19th, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

python-pg cannot be installed

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30366. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for python-pg, which is an interface between the Python programming language and the PostgreSQL database system, was built against an old version of PostgreSQL and consequently could not installed. Attempting to install the package results in the following error message:

Some requested packages cannot be installed:
python-pg-3.7-1mdv2007.0.i586 (due to unsatisfied libpq.so.4)

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, python-pg-3.7-2mdv2007.1, was released on April 21st, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

virt-manager does not run due to missing dependencies

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30234. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for virt-manager, a tool for managing virtual machines, was missing some dependencies. This means that it can be installed via the official package management tools without also triggering the installation of other packages that are in fact necessary for it to run. The missing dependencies are pygtk2.0-libglade, gnome-python-gconf, gnome-python-gnomevfs, libxml2-python and librsvg.

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, virt-manager-0.3.1-3mdv2007.1, was released on April 21st, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

python-twisted-words is unusable

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30284. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for python-twisted-words, a component of the Twisted networking engine, was built against Python 2.4, not Python 2.5 as included in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. This renders it unusable.

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, python-twisted-words-0.4.0-2mdv2007.1, was released on April 21st, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for freemind, a Java-based mind mapping tool, incorrectly forced the use of the jamvm Java virtual machine, when it should work with any Java virtual machine. This also leads to freemind not working on the i586 architecture due to a problem with jamvm on that architecture.

We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, freemind-0.9.0-3mdv2007.1, was released on April 27th, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.

Installation

Keyboard and mouse do not respond on Dell machines

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31630. Several users of Dell machines have reported that USB mice and keyboards do not work during the installation process, making it impossible to install Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring unless the machine also has PS/2 ports. This appears to be a bug in the BIOS of these machines. This appears to be due to a bad interaction with the gfxboot graphical boot system used by the Mandriva installer (and also by OpenSUSE, which is affected by the same issue).

It can be worked around by disabling gfxboot. To do this, hold down the 'shift' key while booting the system, immediately after the Dell splash screen disappears. After a while, the following prompt will be displayed:

Load boot graphics y/n?

Enter 'n'. A text boot screen will appear, with a boot: prompt. Type linux and press enter, and the installation process will begin.

Dell has released BIOS updates which resolves this issue for various products. The Dell XPS 410n BIOS was updated to 2.5.0 in June 2007: this version resolves the issue. The Dell Latitude C610 BIOS was updated to A16 in May 2003: this version resolves the issue. We advise all Dell owners encountering this problem to check with Dell for a BIOS update.

Incorrect theme used for install boot screen in Powerpack+ x86-32 edition

When the Powerpack+ x86-32 edition installer is booted, an incorrect background graphic is displayed for the initial boot screens before the installer proper is loaded. This is an unfortunate graphical error with no more serious consequences. The correct edition is being installed.

Java packages not included in Discovery, Free and Powerpack editions

Due to size constraints, the java-1.5 and java-1.6 package sets, containing the runtime environments for Java 5 and Java 6 respectively, are not included on the Discovery, Free and Powerpack editions of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. These packages are available from the non-free section of the public package repositories, and can be installed using the system software installation tools once the repositories have been configured. For information on configuring internet package repositories and installing packages from them, please see this page.

locate not included in Free and Powerpack editions

Again due to size constraints, the mlocate package (which provides the locate command, a change from previous releases where slocate provided this command) is not included on the Free and Powerpack editions of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. It can be installed from the public repositories. To configure your system to use the public repositories, follow the instructions here. Then use the graphical software installation tool (or urpmi) to install the mlocate package.

Boot

'Help' screen at boot does not display correctly

When the system is first booted, you are advised that you can press F1 for further boot options. On pressing F1, the next screen is not correctly displayed. To work around this, press F1 once more, and another page will be displayed. At the bottom of this page is an option labelled "Return to boot options". Using this will return you to the screen that should have been displayed when you first pressed F1.

Kernel

General instructions: kernel problems often require the use of kernel parameters. To set up kernel parameters to be used at every boot, run Mandriva Control Center and go to the Boot tab. Click on "Set up how the system boots". Click on "next". Choose the menu entry you usually use to boot the system (normally just 'linux', the default choice) and click 'Modify'. Then type the required kernel parameters into the 'Append' box, click 'OK', and then click 'Finish'.

kernel-enterprise incompatible with ACPI suspend

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27071. Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring's support for PAE, an i586 instruction set extension used to allow support for over 4GB of physical memory, is incompatible with the ACPI suspend mechanism. This means you cannot use ACPI suspend with kernel-enterprise (the Mandriva kernel variant which allows support for more than 4GB of RAM). Currently you must choose between support for more than 4GB of RAM or support for ACPI suspend, you cannot have both. This issue may be fixed with a future kernel update.

XFS filesystem issues

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #24716. Some users have encountered a bug in XFS support in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring which can result in failure to read the disk and also possible data loss when the filesystem is under heavy load, for instance when attempting to transfer a large amount of data using rsync. It is possible this issue may be fixed by developments in the upstream kernel. If so, the fix will be added to the Mandriva kernel as an official update.

Slow internet response (particularly web browsing)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27070. There is a known problem with all Linux distributions that enable IPv6 networking (the new standard for network addresses which uses a longer, hexadecimal address format to provide a much larger number of possible addresses. The old standard is IPv4, which gives the four-groups-of-three-digits decimal address format most people are familiar with, e.g. 216.105.167.65). Some systems and networks do not cope well if your system has IPv6 networking enabled. If you experience sluggish response on the Internet - especially when browsing web sites - and cannot find the cause, you should try disabling IPv6. To do this, edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network, add the following line, and reboot:

NETWORKING_IPV6=no

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27073. If this does not resolve the problem, there is another possibility. Most Linux distributions, including Mandriva, enable a kernel feature called TCP window scaling. This is useful for increasing the speed of transfers over very high bandwidth connections. However, a change was made in the default values for TCP window scaling in kernel 2.6.17, which seems to cause very slow network performance for some users with some internet sites. To see if TCP window scaling is the problem, you can disable it with this command:

sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0

If this resolves the problem, you can make the change permanent by adding this line to the file /etc/sysctl.conf :

net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0

This will disable TCP window scaling at every boot. If you do use a very high bandwidth network connection - for instance, you regularly transfer large files over a local 100Mbit or 1Gbit network - you may notice that disabling TCP window scaling results in slower performance over this connection. In this case, you could try restoring the pre-2.6.17 default settings rather than disabling TCP window scaling entirely. To do this, add the following line to /etc/sysctl.conf, instead of (not in addition to) the previously suggested one:

net.ipv4.tcp_rmem=4096 87380 174760

This will change the default window scaling settings at every boot.

Issue with networking/firewire on Zepto/Compal models including Znote 6515WD

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #18938. Using these laptops you will get "Disabling IRQ# 11" (or similar) resulting in broken networking.

After installation this can be fixed by making a few changes to the /etc/modprobe.conf file:

blacklist ohci1394
blacklist ieee1394

IPv6 connections do not work correctly

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30605. Due to a change in glibc, connection attempts do not attempt to bind to the IPv6 socket before falling back on IPv4, as they should. This causes IPv6 connections not to work correctly. This problem can be avoided by creating the file /etc/gai.conf with the following contents:

label  ::1/128       0
label  ::/0          1
label  2002::/16     2
label ::/96          3
label ::ffff:0:0/96  4
precedence  ::1/128       50
precedence  ::/0          40

Sound always plays through speakers on Zepto / Compal Znote 6515WD

See also FIXME. On this laptop model, sound always plays through the internal speakers even if you plug a pair of headphones or speakers into the headphone / speaker output jack. If you want to be able to toggle between using the internal speakers and the headphone / speaker output jack, there is a script that can help you. To use it, first download the script, filename 'speaker'. Open a console and navigate to the directory where you saved the script. Now run this command, to make it executable:

chmod ugo+x speaker

Next, run the command su and enter your root password to gain root privileges. Then run this command, to make root the owner of the script:

chown root.root speaker

Finally, run this command to move the file to the /usr/bin directory, so you can run it from anywhere:

mv speaker /usr/bin

You can now switch between the internal speakers and the headphone jack with these two commands:

speaker on
speaker off

Please note that this script will not work for all laptops that display the same symptom (sound always playing through internal speakers). For many models, you can toggle between the internal speakers and the headphone / speaker jack by toggling one of the switches in the KDE or GNOME volume control applets.

ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27074. The hardware encryption support in the ipw2200 module (which supports recent Intel Centrino wireless networking chipsets) is known to be buggy in some cases, causing connectivity issues which result in this error in the system logs. To fix this add the following to the /etc/modprobe.conf file:

options ipw2200 hwcrypto=0

PC Card devices not found

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #26112. Users of some (particularly new) laptop models may find that the system does not seem to recognise PC Card devices at all. If you are having trouble with PC Card devices, check whether they show up in the output of the command lspci run as root. If not, you may be suffering from this problem. To fix it, you can try rebooting after adding the following kernel parameter (for instructions on using kernel parameters, see the start of this section):

pci=assign-busses

This is known to be a problem on the following systems: Acer Travelmate 2410 series (2413) and HP ZV 5217EA laptop.

Broadcom wireless network devices not working / unstable

Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring includes the bcm43xx driver for Broadcom wireless network chipsets. Broadcom chips are frequently used in systems with integrated wireless networking, for instance laptops. Your system's manual / technical specifications document should tell you the manufacturer of your wireless chipset.

The bcm43xx driver is a relatively new development and is based on reverse engineering, not official Broadcom technical specifications (which are not provided). The driver is therefore incomplete, contains some bugs and does not work correctly with all varieties of Broadcom chipsets. If you have a Broadcom wireless chipset, Mandriva is using the bcm43xx driver, and you are not satisfied with its performance, you may consider using ndiswrapper as an alternative. ndiswrapper is a module which uses Windows drivers to provide wireless networking on Linux. This has obvious compromises in terms of licensing, but in some cases will give better results than the bcm43xx driver. ndiswrapper should be included and available as an option in the networking configuration tool (you can choose either to use the bcm43xx driver or 'a Windows driver', which means using ndiswrapper).

Some laptops (VAIO VGN-FS115B, Asus W6A) run slowly on AC power

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #24598. Some laptop models, including the Sony VAIO VGN-FS115B and Asus W6A, run Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring at the expected speed when running from battery power, but run much slower when the AC power adapter is connected and they are running from mains power. It is not currently known what causes this problem. A workaround is to disable local APIC on boot. To do this, go to the Mandriva Control Center. Go to the Boot tab, and click on 'Set up how the system boots'. Click on 'Advanced'. Uncheck the box labelled 'Enable Local APIC'. Click 'Next'. Click 'Finish'. Close down all open applications, and reboot the system. Another workaround is to install and use the kernel-tmb kernel from the /contrib section instead of the official kernel package. For instructions on installing additional packages, see Installing and removing software.

SATA disks not recognized on MSI K9A Platinum motherboard

A user has reported that the Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring kernel does not recognize SATA devices on this motherboard model. To resolve this, please use this kernel parameter:

pci=nomsi

Hardware issues

NVIDIA / ATI: 3D acceleration lost, display degrades in quality or fails to work entirely after kernel updates

Some users of NVIDIA and ATI graphics cards have noticed graphical problems with kernel updates on Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. This is caused by the proprietary NVIDIA / ATI drivers not being updated when the kernel is updated. If you install an update, reboot, and find your graphical capabilities adversely affected, please do the following:

  • Install or update the kernel-source-stripped-latest package
  • For NVIDIA users, check that the dkms-nvidia package is installed, install it if necessary
  • For ATI users, check that the dkms-ati package is installed, install it if necessary
  • Reboot
  • Re-run the graphics card configuration utility - open the Mandriva Control Center and go to the Hardware tab, then click on Set up the graphical server, click on Graphic Card
  • Re-configure your card. When asked whether to use the proprietary driver, say 'yes'
  • Reboot or restart X

and the problem should be resolved. If the kernel update caused you to lose graphical functionality entirely, you should be able to choose the 'kernel-2.6.17.13mdv' option on the bootloader screen to boot an older kernel, which should restore graphical functionality so you can follow these steps.

3D acceleration not correctly activated on Intel graphics chipsets on x86-64 versions

Due to an error in the installation process, 3D acceleration is not correctly activated on Intel graphics chipsets on x86-64 versions of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. To resolve this problem, following installation, please launch the graphics card configuration utility and re-configure your card: open the Mandriva Control Center and go to the Hardware tab, then click on Set up the graphical server, click on Graphic Card, click on OK (the correct choice should already be selected), and click on Quit.

Writing to floppy disks is very slow

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #19763. Writing to traditional (not USB) floppy disks in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring is very slow. This is due to inefficient but very safe default mounting options.

This issue can be worked around by changing the mount options. To do this, you need to edit the file /etc/fstab. For information on editing system configuration files, see this page. The file will contain a line similar to this:

none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,sync 0 0

The offending option is 'sync', near the end of the line. Change this to 'dirsync', for instance:

none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,umask=0,iocharset=utf8,dirsync 0 0

After making this change, please note that you should 'unmount' floppy disks before you remove them, in the same way as you should for other removable storage devices, by right-clicking on the icon for the disk and selecting the 'Unmount' option. Failure to do this may result in data corruption.

No display on certain laptops with Nvidia graphics chipsets (Toshiba Satellite 5205-S503, Dell Inspiron 8100, 8200)

Some users have reported a problem with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring where no graphical desktop is displayed after the boot up process is complete on certain laptop models. This problem occurs on laptops where the internal display panel is connected via a DVI interface, but the NVIDIA driver incorrectly detects a VGA connection. Models known to be affected include the Toshiba Satellite 5205-S503 with the GeForce 460 Go chipset and the Dell Inspiron 8100 and 8200 with the GeForce 440 Go chipset. The issue can be resolved by adding the following line to the Device section of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Option "UseDisplayDevice" "DFP"

For instructions on editing system configuration files, see this page.

IBM and Toshiba laptop special keys do not work

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30523. Support for the special key combinations ('hotkeys') on some IBM and Toshiba laptop models was inadvertently left out of the hal package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring. This results in these key combinations failing to work.

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: hal-0.5.9-2mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated hal packages. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30523.

Problems with reconfiguring network printers

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29524. The printer configuration tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains bugs affecting network printer configuration. When trying to change the protocol used by a configured network printer, the port is not correctly updated, causing the new configuration to fail to work. Also, general reconfiguration of network printers fails due to the printer configuration utility using an incorrect command.

A candidate fix for these issues has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: printerdrake-1.5.7.1-2mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated printerdrake package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #29524.

Graphical desktop does not start correctly: black screen is displayed

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30069. The graphics card configuration tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring could, in certain cases, generate an invalid configuration file which would result in a blank screen when the graphical desktop (X.org) starts up. This can be worked around by logging in to a virtual console, editing the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and removing the custom ModeLines that the configuration tool adds.

A candidate fix for these issues has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: drakx-kbd-mouse-x11-0.15.1-1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated drakx-kbd-mouse-x11 package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30069. After installing the update, you must run the graphical configuration tool (XFdrake) and allow it to reconfigure your graphics card. This issue may also affect live boot of the Mandriva Linux One edition, in which case the updated package cannot be used, and the xorg.conf file must be edited at each boot.

Some Pinnacle PCTV 310i cards do not work

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31590. The kernel included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains incorrect URLs for the location of firmware files for various Pinnacle PCTV 310i TV cards, preventing the user from obtaining the firmware for these cards and thus preventing them from working.

To render these cards usable, follow these steps:

  • Install the package kernel-source-stripped-latest (instructions on package installation are available at Installing and removing software)
  • Run the following commands at a console, with adminstrator privileges (instructions on this are available at Being root)
cd /usr/src/linux
wget --output-document=dvb.patch http://qa.mandriva.com/attachment.cgi?id=7062
patch -p0 < dvb.patch
chmod 755 Documentation/dvb/get_dvb_firmware
perl Documentation/dvb/get_dvb_firmware tda10045
cp dvb-fe-tda10045.fw /lib/firmware/
perl Documentation/dvb/get_dvb_firmware tda10046
cp dvb-fe-tda10046.fw /lib/firmware/
modprobe saa7134-dvb
echo "saa7134-dvb" >> /etc/modprobe.preload

Software issues

Invalid signature errors when installing packages

Several users who installed Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring soon after release have reported getting signature errors when trying to install packages from Internet repositories. For a short period after the release of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, when setting up Internet repositories, the wrong key was associated with each repository, so the system believes the packages are not signed with the correct key (when in fact they are). To resolve this problem, you can either remove and re-configure the repositories (following the instructions in this page), or run the following command with administrator privileges: urpmi.update -a --force-key. For instructions on running commands with administrator privileges, see this page.

drakfont cannot import Windows (TM) fonts from partitions mounted via FUSE (e.g. ntfs-3g)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #28016. The drakfont utility included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which causes it to be unable to import fonts from Microsoft Windows (TM) installations on partitions mounted via the FUSE system (for instance, NTFS partitions mounted via ntfs-3g). This issue will be resolved with the release of an official update.

Cannot install certain packages (those listed in /etc/urpmi/skip.list) with rpmdrake

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31548. The rpmdrake package management utility included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring incorrectly disallows the manual selection of packages listed in the file /etc/urpmi/skip.list. The intention of this file is to prevent the packages listed from being automatically updated, not to prevent them being manually installed. This in particular prevents the installation of the kernel-source-latest and kernel-source-stripped-latest packages with the default configuration.

This issue can be worked around by removing the packages in question from the skip.list file. A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: rpmdrake-3.69.3-1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated rpmdrake package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #31548.

Cannot use synthesis.hdlist.cz file in same directory as packages with urpmi.addmedia

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31081. The urpmi software management tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug. It should be possible to issue a command of the form:

urpmi.addmedia urpmitest2 /root/rpmtest with synthesis.hdlist.cz

with the file synthesis.hdlist.cz in the /root/rpmtest directory along with the packages, in order to set up this directory as an urpmi media. However, this fails, with the following error message:

unable to parse hdlist file of "urpmitest2"
problem reading synthesis file of medium "urpmitest2"
unable to update medium "urpmitest2"
removing medium "urpmitest2"

If instead a full (rather than synthesis) hdlist, hdlist.cz, is used, the command works without problems. Using a synthesis hdlist file in a media_info subdirectory also works. Only the use of a synthesis hdlist in the same directory as the packages fails.

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: urpmi-4.9.21.1-3mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated urpmi package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #31081.

Cannot add urpmi media from removable devices

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30257. The urpmi software management tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug. Attempting to configure urpmi media from a removable device, using the removable:// syntax, will fail, with the following messages:

urpmi.addmedia restr removable://media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted
adding medium "restr"
/bin/cp: cannot stat `/media/cdrom/i586/media/restricted/reconfig.urpmi': No such file or directory
copy failed at /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/urpm/download.pm line 218.

Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30257.

urpmi parallel mode does not work correctly

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30996. The urpmi software management tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which causes the parallel mode (urpmi --parallel) to fail with the following error message:

Can't use string ("test") as a HASH ref while "strict refs" in use at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/urpm/parallel_ssh.pm line 228.

Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30996.

urpmi sometimes fails when installing many packages at once

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30848. The urpmi software management tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug. Package installation transactions should always be split into many small steps, so that only a few packages are installed at once. Sometimes this does not happen, and urpmi wishes to install many (several hundred) packages all at once. In this situation, a further bug causes the installation to fail. We are still investigating the cause of the first problem (installation transactions not always being split into many small groups of packages).

A candidate fix for the second issue has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: urpmi-4.9.21.1-3mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated urpmi package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30848.

Krita crashes when saving a file in PNG format

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29127. Krita, the KOffice image editing application, crashes when attempting to save a file in PNG format. This issue will be resolved by an official update. In the mean time, we recommend users work around this issue by saving files in an alternative format. They can then be converted to PNG format in another application, for example GIMP, if necessary.

Ktorrent corrupts files larger than 4GB

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30510. The version of ktorrent, a KDE-native BitTorrent client, shipped in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which causes it to corrupt file downloads larger than 4GB (for example, full DVD-size disc images).

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: ktorrent-2.1.2-2.1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated ktorrent package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30510.

O3spaces does not work correctly on Powerpack+ i586

Due to the missing Java packages issue described in the Installation section above, O3spaces does not work out of the box on the i586 version of the Powerpack+ edition. To resolve this issue, please follow the instructions in the Java issue to install the java-1.5.0-sun package, then relaunch O3spaces by running the following command with administrator privileges: service -f o3_tomcat. For instructions on running commands with administrator privileges, see this page.

UTF-8 issue when reinstalling and keeping a previous /home that was not in UTF-8

When installing instead of upgrading, and keeping a previous /home, the install doesn't convert the /home to UTF-8 and some characters might not display properly in filenames.

To solve this issue, save the following convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl script in your /home/UserName/, and run the following commands to convert your /home/UserName/ to UTF-8:

cd ~/
chmod u+rx convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl
./convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl

Video players crash when trying to play high resolution videos (using Intel graphics adapters)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29578. The driver for Intel i810 and later graphics chipsets automatically allocates a set amount of resources for accelerating playback of video files. In many situations, it does not allocate enough resources to play back higher resolution videos (this probably is most commonly seen with videos of 1024x576 resolution or higher, but in some cases it may kick in at a higher or lower resolution). If you attempt to play a video of too high a resolution, the video player will quit with an X error message.

There are two possible workarounds for this issue. The first is to use a non-accelerated playback method. This will allow the video to play, but it will very likely play too slowly. For details on this method, see #3D-accelerated desktop and video playback below, as the same workaround is used in that case. The second is to increase the resource allocation by making a change to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. You should add a line like this to the "Device" section:

Option "CacheLines" "1024"

The number (1024 in this example) should be the highest dimension of the video file you need to play: so, if you were attempting to play a 1920x1200 video, you would need to set the number to 1920.

For chipset 830 and higher you can also consider this option for up to 1920x1440 HD movies:

Option "LinearAlloc" "6144"

After making this changes, you must restart the X server: log out of your desktop, and then on the login screen, hold the control key, then press and hold the alt key, then press the backspace key. Your screen will flash black for a moment and then return. You can now log in again and play the video.

Cervisia does not work correctly

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30497. Some users have reported that the package for cervisia, a KDE front end to the CVS revision control system, contains bugs causing it not to work correctly. Reported problems include failure to correctly display the status of files (all files are displayed as changed, even when they are in fact not changed) and failure to correctly update any files from the repository.

The only known workaround currently is to use an alternative application for CVS. The Mandriva KDE team is working on a resolution for this issue.

Totem browser plugin fails to play files

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29513. The version of the GNOME media player Totem included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which can cause the browser plugin - totem-mozilla - to be unable to play back simple files placed on websites. True streaming files are not affected. Note that the alternative gstreamer-based version of the plugin - totem-mozilla-gstreamer - is also not affected. This issue will be resolved by the release of an official update.

Blender hangs with console message Launching 0 threads

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30137. The blender package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which can cause it to hang in some (hardware and project-specific) situations. If Blender is run from the console, the following message will be seen:

Launching 0 threads

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: blender-2.43-4mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated blender package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30137.

Cannot watch TV properly with kdetv

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31033. Some users have reported that they could not succeed in using the kdetv package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring to watch television successfully with Brooktree chipset-based TV cards. They found that this issue could be resolved by ensuring that only the Video4Linux driver was selected in the video driver section of kdetv's preferences (de-selecting other drivers, such as Video4Linux2).

NVIDIA or ATI video driver stops working after a kernel update

Due to an issue in the update process for Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, some users have experienced a problem whereby the NVIDIA or ATI graphics card drivers (and also some other drivers that use the DKMS packaging system) stop working after they perform a system update which includes the kernel package, and reboot. This is because these drivers must be updated for the new kernel version. If the package kernel-source-stripped-latest or kernel-source-latest is not updated along with the kernel, the drivers cannot be updated by the system when you reboot, and this problem will occur. To resolve the problem, you must update (or install, if one or the other is not installed) either the kernel-source-stripped-latest or kernel-source-latest package to the latest version, and reboot.

Some k3b functions do not work (normalization)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #20728. The k3b CD / DVD writing application included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring uses other programs for some functions. Specifically, it uses the normalize tool for normalizing sound levels, and the emovix tool for creating auto-playing audio / video discs. However, the k3b package does not depend on these other tools, so it is possible that they will fail due to the tools not being available. The normalize package is available in Mandriva: to enable normalization functions, simply install it (instructions on installing packages are available at Installing and removing software. emovix is not currently available as a package in Mandriva. You can find the tool and help on installing it at its home page.

No sound with WengoPhone

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31753. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for wengophone, an Internet phone application, contains a bug. The menu entry does not run the application through the Mandriva soundwrapper script, which is used to make sure the application runs correctly with whichever sound server is available. This can often result in no sound being available, which obviously renders the application useless.

This problem can be worked around by editing the wengophone menu entry with a menu editor like KMenuEdit (in the kdebase-kmenuedit package) and changing the command that it runs from qtwengophone to soundwrapper qtwengophone. The issue will be resolved with the future release of an official update.

Graphics card configuration tool reports no 3D acceleration with NVIDIA graphics cards

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31326. The graphics card configuration tool included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, drakx11, contains a bug which causes it to report "3D hardware acceleration: no" for NVIDIA graphics cards when configured to use the proprietary NVIDIA graphics card driver, even though in this case 3D hardware acceleration is in fact enabled and working.

Skencil fails to work correctly with text

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #20899. The package for the drawing application Skencil included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which causes it not to be able to access the system fonts correctly. Consequently, it is impossible to enter text properly in Skencil, and Skencil will consume a high level of system resources if you attempt to use the text tools.

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: skencil-0.6.18-0.695.4mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Stopmotion crashes with certain TV cards (Brooktree bt848 / bt878)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #28638. The version of Stopmotion, a stop-motion animation creation system, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which can cause it to crash when used with Brooktree bt848 / bt878-based TV cards (those using the bttv driver). This bug was fixed in later versions of Stopmotion, and will be fixed in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring by applying this fix to the version included with the distribution (0.5.3).

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: stopmotion-0.5.3-3mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated stopmotion package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #28638.

Unison fails to run

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #24811. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for unison, a file synchronization tool, contains a bug which causes it to fail to start up in some circumstances. If you install unison and then attempt to run it before restarting the system, it will fail with the following error message (if run from a console):

Uncaught exception Gpointer.Null

To avoid this problem, either restart the system after installing unison, or restart the X font server. This can be achieved by restarting the xfs service, which you can do from the Mandriva Control Center or by running this command with administrator privileges: service -f xfs.

dvdstyler translated text items not visible

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #31297. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for dvdstyler, a DVD authoring application, contains a bug which cause many text items (menu entries, text in dialog boxes, and so forth) not to be visible in several languages.

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: dvdstyler-1.5-0.beta7.1.1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. for dname in os.listdir(common.terp_path('themes')):
OSError: [Errno 2] Aucun fichier ou répertoire de ce type:
'/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/tinyerp-client/themes'

This issue can be worked around by creating the /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/tinyerp-client/themes directory. This issue will be resolved by the release of an updated package.

Packaged Azureus fails to work

Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring's contrib section contains a package for the Azureus Bittorrent client. Following Mandriva's policies on software freedom, this packaged version of Azureus is built against the GNU free Java project. Consequently it includes a large number of dependencies. Some users have also reported problems using this version of Azureus. If software freedom is not a priority for you, you may find it more convenient to install Sun's Java runtime environment - which is available from the non-free section of the repositories - and then install Azureus as recommended on the home page. This will give you a copy of Azureus which uses Sun Java, which appears to be the more reliable option.

3D-accelerated desktop (AIGLX, Xgl)

3D-accelerated desktop not starting under GNOME

Some users, especially those upgrading or preserving /home directories from previous versions of Mandriva Linux, may find themselves unable to enable the 3D-accelerated desktop under GNOME. Even after running drak3d and selecting one of the 3D-accelerated desktop options, on login to GNOME the native window manager (metacity) will start up and no 3D desktop effects will be observed. This problem can usually be rectified by removing the file ~/.gnome2/session . We recommend you simply move this file somewhere else (for example, your home directory), rather than deleting it, so it can be restored if problems arise as a result of its removal. Once you have removed the file, log out of GNOME and log back in, and you should observe that compiz is started instead of metacity, and the 3D desktop effects appear.

3D-accelerated desktop and video playback

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #25572. If you use the 3D accelerated desktop technologies included in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring (AIGLX or Xgl), you may notice that video playback does not work very well - moving, resizing, maximising the video window will cause problems, or you may see strange artifacts in or through the video. You may also notice that, if you use the 'cube' feature of compiz, the video does not play while you rotate the cube. To avoid these problems, you should set your video player to use an output driver which does not use video overlay. If you use AIGLX, you should use the x11 / xshm output driver. If you use Xgl, you can use the x11 / xshm driver or the OpenGL output driver (which may be smoother and offer more features, such as brightness / contrast control, than the x11 / xshm driver). The way to do this is different for different video players.

  • For players that use gstreamer (for e.g. totem-gstreamer), run gstreamer-properties, go to the "Video" tab, and set the video output to "X Window System (No Xv)".
  • For mplayer, for x11 / xshm output, add this line to ~/.mplayer/config (and also to ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf if you use the mplayerplugin browser plugin):
vo=x11

For OpenGL output, add the following line instead:

vo=gl2
  • For xine, go to the settings menu, set your configuration experience level to "Advanced", then go to the video tab and change "video driver to use" to "xshm" for x11 / xshm output or "openGL" for OpenGL output. Alternatively, you can use these console commands. For x11 / xshm output:

perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:xshm|' ~/.xine/config

For OpenGL output:

perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:openGL|' ~/.xine/config

  • For Kaffeine, go to the settings menu, select "Xine backend configuration" and in the video tab change the driver to "xshm" for x11 / xshm output or "openGL" for OpenGL output.
  • For Totem in Xine mode, run this command for x11 / xshm output:

perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:xshm|' ~/.gnome2/totem_config

Or this command for OpenGL output:

perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:openGL|' ~/.gnome2/totem_config

  • For x11 / xshm output in KMplayer, go to Settings -> Configure KMplayer. Then in the "General Options" section go to the Output tab. In this section change Video Driver to "X11Shm".

3D-accelerated desktop and some Java/Swing applications

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #25900. Some Java applications using Swing may not display correctly under Xgl/AIGLX with compiz - the usual symptom is that text is not displayed.

A workaround has been added to java-1.5.0-sun in non-free media. If you have installed java-1.6.0-sun at the same time you have to ensure that you use 1.5.0, you can do this the following way:

unset JAVA_HOME; ./etc/profile.d/java*.sh

If you are not using the Mandriva java-1.5.0-sun package, you can resolve this issue manually by running the following command at a console before launching your java application:

export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit

If this works, you may want to add these two lines to the file ~/.bash_profile (that is, the file .bash_profile in your home directory):

AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
export AWT_TOOLKIT

Xgl and multiple user logins

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #27104. In a separate issue from the one above, there is an issue with Xgl which may prevent switching users (i.e. logging in graphically to the desktop as one user, logging out, and then logging in again as a different user).

If you use KDE with the KDM login manager - the default configuration of Mandriva - you can work around this issue by editing the file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc. In the [X-:0-Core] section, add the following line:

Reset=/bin/rm -f /tmp/.X93-lock /tmp/.X11-unix/X93

If you use the GDM login manager, you can work around the issue by editing the file /etc/X11/gdm/PostSession/Default and adding the following as lines 5 and 6:

rm -f /tmp/.X93-lock
rm -f /tmp/.X11-unix/X93

Beryl and screensavers

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29985. A bug in the current Beryl release occurs with a screensaver is run. The bug locks the current X session. Beryl users are strongly advised to disable their screensaver for the moment. The issue is investigated upstream to be fixed in an updated Beryl package.

Issues when updating from a previous release

NVIDIA 3D acceleration not working

Some users have reported that, when upgrading from a previous release of a commercial edition of Mandriva Linux to a commercial edition of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, 3D acceleration on NVIDIA graphics cards is broken. Attempting to run 3D accelerated applications (or to use 3D desktop acceleration) fails or crashes the desktop.

To resolve this issue, you must use the graphics card configuration utility to update the configuration of the card. Open the Mandriva Control Center, click on the 'Hardware' tab, and click on 'Set up the graphical server'. Click on 'Graphic Card', select the appropriate entry for your card (it will probably already be highlighted), and click 'OK'. Click 'Quit'. Now close the Control Center and restart the system.

Broken pam configuration (commands such as su not working)

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #29719 and pam_stack in the release notes. After updating to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring from Mandriva Linux 2006 or from an installation of Mandriva Linux 2007 which was itself updated from Mandriva Linux 2006, some pam configuration files may no longer be valid. This might result in the su and kdesu commands not working.

If some configuration files in the /etc/pam.d directory still contain references to the pam_stack module, they should be migrated, as explained in the /usr/share/doc/pam-0.99.7.1/README.update.urpmi file.

If the affected configuration files do not contain configuration changes made by the system administrator, they can simply be restored from the .rpmnew files in the same directory. For example, to make the su command work again, in the /etc/pam.d directory, replace the content of the su file with the content of the su.rpmnew file: cp -vf /etc/pam.d/su /etc/pam.d/su_bak;cp -vf /etc/pam.d/su.rpmnew /etc/pam.d/su

Removable drives are no longer made available when connected

Some users have reported that on systems upgraded from Mandriva Linux 2007 to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, removable devices are no longer automatically made available when plugged in to the system. This is because the automatic mounting system in Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring uses a mount option that is not available in earlier kernels. The upgrade process does not automatically upgrade the kernel, so if you did not update your kernel when running Mandriva Linux 2007, you will still have an older kernel version that does not support the needed mount option. The solution to this problem is to install the latest available kernel for Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, and reboot. See Installing and removing software for instructions on installing packages.

Monitor powers off when viewing video with Totem

On desktop systems upgraded from previous versions of Mandriva Linux to Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring, your monitor might switch to energy saving mode when viewing a video in full screen mode with the Totem video player under the GNOME desktop. To fix this problem, install the gnome-power-manager package, log out and log back in to GNOME. This issue does not affect fresh installations of Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring.

Server Issues

Amavis fails to connect to ClamAV

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30536. The package for the Amavis mail scanning system included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains an incorrect configuration file setting which causes it to be unable to connect to the ClamAV virus scanner, and consequently not to be able to scan for viruses correctly if ClamAV is used as the virus scanner.

The incorrect setting is the following in /etc/amavisd/amavisd.conf:

\&ask_daemon, ["CONTSCAN {}\n", "/var/run/clamav/clamd"],

To resolve the problem, change it to:

\&ask_daemon, ["CONTSCAN {}\n", "/var/lib/clamav/clamd.socket"]

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: amavisd-new-2.4.5-3.1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated amavisd-new package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30536. Please note that this update will only fix the issue on clean installations where the amavisd.conf file has not been changed (or amavis-new has not been previously installed). If you upgrade from a previous Mandriva Linux release or if you upgrade from the broken version of the package to the fixed version after having configured Amavis, the configuration file will not be overwritten: you will still have to fix the problem manually as described above.

Amavis fails to scan some messages with error lstat() failed

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30536. The package for the ClamAV virus scanning system included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring omits a configuration file setting, which can cause the Amavis mail scanning system to be unable to scan certain messages when ClamAV is used as the virus scanner. The required setting in the file /etc/clamd.conf is:

AllowSupplementaryGroups yes

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: clamav-0.90.2-0.2mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated clamav package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30536. Please note that this update will only fix the issue on clean installations where the clamd.conf file has not been changed (or clamav has not been previously installed). If you upgrade from a previous Mandriva Linux release or if you upgrade from the broken version of the package to the fixed version after having configured ClamAV, the configuration file will not be overwritten: you will still have to fix the problem manually as described above.

Cannot connect to dovecot IMAP server

See also Image:bug_small.png Bug #30420. The package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring for dovecot, an IMAP mail server, contains a bad configuration file for the PAM authentication system which makes it impossible for users to log in to the server.

A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: dovecot-1.0.rc26-1.1mdv2007.1. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated dovecot package. Please report the results of your test to Image:bug_small.png Bug #30420.
