  1. The origin of Nepomuk (in some words) 

The history(story) begins during a meeting in Luxemburg, within the framework of the day organized by the European Commission on the search(research) in the field of the network. Stéphane Laurière ( Arkub), as representing of Mandriva, present then the semantic wiki. The idea of the semantic job(workstation) is to spread(widen) this notion to all the resources of the computer, that it is about e-mails, of history of conversation to jabber, of files texts, images, etc. In a semantic job(workstation), the user has at his/her disposal tools allowing him(her) to organize effectively his resources via métadonnées. This métadonnées will be then the links between the various knots of the network of resources that are documents, musics, web pages.

Search(Research)

Semantic Web begins to be known, notably thanks to streams RSS, to more and more frequent use of tags (in blogs, for example). Tags, they are words, in touch with a resource (article, photo, music to be downloaded) For example, on some blogs, the tag " mandriva " concerns all the articles in touch with mandriva. Tags are thus métadonnées. But then why I speak about Web here? Simply because the semantic job(workstation) and semantic Web are, in the vision of the project Népomuk, so bound(connected) that they make only one.

Today, the separation existing between Web and job(workstation) is very visible. The most powerful search engines, in particular those of Web, use numerous algorithms to optimize the relevance of the answers. In brief, the search engine of semantic Web owes be intelligent. Finally when I speak about intelligence, I do not speak about the engine of IA checking(controlling) the characters of a video game, I speak about a real intelligence to " human scale(ladder) " .Ce was thus a fate if the German center DFKI, specialized in the artificial intelligence, coordine the project.

  1. The objectives of the project Nepomuk 

The creation and the validation of opened standards

The first objective of Nepomuk is first of all to create the standards opened around the concept of semantic job(workstation), quite as the html is the language of Web. At the moment the partners participating in the project establish the basic specifications of tools.

The creation of API (interfaces of programming)

To throw(launch) the dynamics around these standards and confront them with the reality, it was decided, within the framework of the project subjected to the European Commission, to develop in parallel environments software implementing the rising standards of Nepomuk.

It is here that intervenes Mandriva: his(her,its) main task consists in mobilizing the communities of developers around this project.
