Download area redesign notes (Q1/2 2009)

Today, http://www.mandriva.com/download/ only links to One/Free downloads.

The goal is that all Mandriva downloads are available from this page, both for anonymous people and for authenticated people (who may access private downloads).

On one hand, the current Download page is dead simple, on the other hand it does not provide all downloads a user might expect.

Download items:

  • One
    • Select localized version based on browser language setting, but allow custom changes.
    • Select prefered desktop environment: KDE or Gnome.
  • Free
    • Select Architecture: i586 or x86-64
    • Select medium type: CD-ROM, DVD, or Mini Dual-arch CD.
  • Powerpack (for Powerpack subscribers)
  • Flash boot, restore and update ISOs (for purchasers)
  • Corporate Server
  • etc.
  • additional, non-Mandriva software

Available download protocols to consider (not necessarily for every item):

  • HTTP/S
    • Mirror location selection
  • FTP
    • Mirror location selection
  • Bittorrent
  • rsync? not likely, or for advanced users/configs

Parts of this platform may be used by the Store, for paid items.

Remarks welcome.
