World Of Goo is a commercial game developed by the publisher 2DBoy, a group of independent programmers. It is one of the few games to be available for the three major operating systems: Windows, Mac OS and Linux. It is a puzzle game with a very simple story, but rather consist of many enigmas which it is delightful to manipulate balls of goo.

Principle

The goal is to make these little goos structures to channel remaining goos to the next level.
The constructions made of balls goos sometimes require knowledge of engineering and the concepts of balance.

The Goos are like sticky balls (which may be of different types) which cling to each other or the walls of the environment.

You use the balls of Goo to build structures to reach the outlet pipe level in the same state of mind that lemmings (mythical game of the 80s). Gradually as you progress through the game, new kinds of balls appear, each with their peculiarities (reusable, flammable, etc..).

To complete a level, you must leave at least a minimum number of balls of Goo by the pipe.

The most persistent may attempt to achieve the OCD goals (Obsessive Criterion of Distinction) for each level : this can range from collecting a certain number of balls of goo, finish the level in record time, or in a minimum of movement, etc..

Flashing panels provide clues or information over various levels. An online mode allows you to compete with world wide players.

Most of you geeks will appreciate the little winks (a level which is called "Hello, World", the "0" and "1" sown by the Goo balls in the world, etc.).

Tip !
The unofficial website Goo Fans hosts a community of fans of the game and contains an extensive database of many extensions and additional levels, enough to extend the lifespan of the game.

Installation

You can install the game from its website using the provided RPM packages for Mandriva and Fedora.

You can try the game by installing the demo to play the entire first world.

Please note!
Once you have paid for the full game, you will receive a link via e-mail from which you can download the game for the platforms that you want: Linux, Windows, Mac OS.

Patch for Mandriva 2010 and Fedora 12

World of goo and its demo cannot be launched because of two game libraries that are not up-to-date.

Users with these distributions (2009 Spring users are not affected) can download and install the following patch as follows:

  • Download the patch and extract the executable (in KDE, right click on the archive and "Extract here").
  • Open a console as an administrator and type dolphin /opt/WorldOfGoo (substitute dolphin by nautilus for Gnome and thunar for Xfce). If you use the demo, type rather /opt/WorldOfGooDemo).
  • Cut and paste the executable (.run) in the game folder which should have opened and run the file immediately applying the update. Once completed, exit by pressing Enter.

Keyboard control

  • Alt-Enter : Toggle between full-screen mode and windowed mode
  • Alt-F4 : Quit the game at any point. Any progress made in the current level will be lost!
  • Alt-M : Toggle sound (mute/unmute)

Settings

The game settings (video, audio, etc..) can be modified in the properties/config.txt file in the game's directory.

You can copy this file in /home/user/.WorldOfGoo (without changing the original file) to have independent settings for each user of the system and can restore the configuration file or if problem.

Adjusting display resolution

If you want to change the full-screen resolution of the game (which is 800x600 by default) or start the game in windowed mode, you can do so by changing the "screen_width", "screen_height" and "fullscreen" parameters in /opt/WorldOfGoo/Parameters/config.txt.

Playing with more than one mouse

The Linux version of World of Goo can be played with up to four players at a time, each using a separate mouse. In order to use this feature, edit config.txt and change the "manymouse" parameter value from "false" to "true".

Furthermore, the mouse event devices for the mice to be used must be readable by the user running World of Goo. An easy way to set this up is to execute (as the root user) :

[root@computer ~]# chmod a+r /dev/input/by-id/*event-mouse
