I motsetning til noen andre operativsystemer så har Mandriva Linux sine programmer i såkalte pakkebrønner/medier eller "repositories". Dette betyr at du bare kan hekte på disse og deretter fritt installere en mengde programmer.

Hvordan hekte på medier
Den enkleste måten å hekte på pakkebrønner, er å gå til http://urpmi.mandriva.ru/?language=en og klikke på to knapper og dermed er (nesten) alle programmer du trenger tilgjengelige for installasjon. Du må velge arkitektur oppe til venstre (32bit = i586, denne er forhåndsvalgt. Eller 64bit = x86_64). Deretter velger du Mandriva versjon på fanene oppe til høyre. Alternativt kan du gjøre dette i det grafiske grensesnittet:
Konfigurere mediene
For å konfigurere programvaremedier (også kallt repositories),må du bruke modulen 
drakrpm-edit-media. Den kan kjøres:
- fra System, videre Administrasjon > Innstillinger for maskinen din.
- fra terminalen der du bruker komandoen drakrpm-edit-media.
Denne modusen lar deg konfigurere mediene som skal brukes for å installere og oppdatere pakker og applikasjoner.Denne modulen er spesielt nyttig for å konfigurere offisielle medier. Den gir deg muligheteten til å kontrollere hvilke applikasjonstyper som din programvarehåndterer skal ha tilgang til.

Siden Mandriva 2009.0, kan ikke svitsjene M.A.J. (oppdateringer) hukes av som vanlig. For å endre disse svitsjene, må du gå via terminalen og skrive drakrpm-edit-media --expert. Dette vil starte programet i ekspertmodus, og hjelper til å forebygge feil.
