[edit] Radeon HD series support

The new version of ATI's proprietary graphics card driver, 8.41.7, has been included in the non-free repository alongside the previous version, 8.40.4. The 8.40.4 version will be used for Radeon X1xxx series cards and earlier, and the 8.41.7 version will be used for Radeon HD series cards (HD2400, HD2600 and HD2900). If you have a Radeon HD card, the proprietary driver should be automatically used by the One edition of RC2. If you use the Free edition, then you should be able to use the proprietary driver by enabling the non-free repository and using the drakx11 graphics card configuration tool to enable the proprietary driver. Please report a bug if this does not work correctly. Note that the proprietary driver will not be used for Mobility Radeon HD cards as the ATI documentation for the new driver does not claim that they are supported.

The new free software driver for Radeon X1xxx and HD cards, radeonhd, is also available in the main repository. The package name is x11-driver-video-radeonhd. This driver will not automatically be used for any card as it is still very new and untested, but if you wish to try it out with your card, you can install the package and then use drakx11 to select the driver manually.

The avivo driver is no longer used as the default free software driver for most Radeon X1xxx series cards. It has been enabled on three cards which were reported by testers to work well with it. All other X1xxx series cards, along with HD series cards, will now default to the vesa driver as their default free software driver.

[edit] Significant kernel updates

Some significant changes have been made to the kernel since RC1 that fix many bugs. Most importantly, patches have been introduced that should fix critical issues with some JMicron and AMD ATA controllers, which prevented Mandriva from using any ATA drives on systems which used these controllers (and thus made it impossible to install from CD if you had an ATA CD drive). The ALSA sound card driver subsystem has also been updated from 1.0.14 to 1.0.15RC2. This fixes many problems related to High Definition Audio chipsets, commonly used on Intel chipset motherboards.

[edit] New menu system refinements

Changes have been made to over a hundred packages to improve the layout of the new menu system which was initially introduced in RC1. You should find that there are far fewer issues with oversized menus, applications appearing in multiple or inappropriate locations, and applications not appearing on the menus at all in RC2.

[edit] New features in urpmi and rpmdrake

There have been several important changes to the Mandriva package management tools, urpmi and rpmdrake. urpmi now displays the list of packages that will be installed in a row / column layout, with separate columns for package name, version, release and repository. rpmdrake also now uses a column layout its packages lists. Its startup time has been improved, and the list of packages is now sortable by various criteria.

[edit] Many bugs fixed

There have been hundreds of smaller bug fixes and package updates since RC1. In all, 544 bugs have been marked FIXED in Bugzilla since RC1 was released, and 2,562 package updates have taken place.

  • as a Free edition for the x86-32 and x86-64 architectures, on three CDs or one DVD, with a traditional installer
  • a a mini CD edition for both x86-32 and x86-64 architectures
  • as a One combined live / install CD edition

[edit] Testing wanted

You are encouraged to test and comment on this release candidate. Feedback should be posted in the form of bug reports to Bugzilla, or if it is not a type of feedback that can be expressed as a bug report, to the Cooker mailing list or to the Mandriva Forums.

  • Check that all your hardware is supported. Note that the Free editions of this release candidate only include free software. Proprietary drivers for components which require or can use them - especially for ATI and NVIDIA video cards, Intel Centrino wireless adapters, and HSF modems - are available from the Cooker non-free repository. Follow the instructions at Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software#Making_more_applications_available to configure this and other repositories. It should be noted that if you continue to use these repositories after the release of Mandriva Linux 2008, you will then be following the development of the next release of Mandriva Linux. If you wish to follow development of 2008 and then remain with a 2008 system, you must change your repositories at the time 2008 is released.
  • Report any missing or unwanted software. Please take care to see if these issues have already been filed.
