Major new features in this pre-release include:

[править] Codeina multimedia codec installation system

This pre-release introduces the Codeina framework for providing and installing codecs for playing multimedia files in formats for which a codec is not already available on the system. This will make it much easier to play back a range of formats in Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring.

[править] Easy synchronization support

This pre-release introduces easy support for synchronizing many mobile devices with the KDE and GNOME desktops, particularly Windows Mobile 5, 6 and 6.1 PDAs and smartphones, Blackberry smartphones, and many Nokia phones. Changes to implement this support include the introduction of several new packages, including the KitchenSync synchronization application, bug fixes, and the addition of metapackages (task packages) for each class of device. [править] ATI Radeon HD 3xxx series support

This pre-release includes support for most cards in ATI's new Radeon HD 3xxx range. Support is available in both the proprietary driver - fglrx - and the open source driver - radeonhd. If you have such a card, it should be supported automatically, using the fglrx driver (in the One edition) or the radeonhd driver (in the Free edition). Please report a bug if you have such a card and it does not work with this pre-release.

[править] 2008 Spring graphical theme finalized

The new 2008 Spring theme is now completed and fully integrated, including KDE integration of the new time-based background feature where the background changes gradually depending on the time of day.

[править] Further enhancements to Mandriva software management tools

Further improvements have been made to the interface of the RPMdrake graphical software management tool. The search interface has been reorganized to provide more capabilities while being easier to understand and use. Packages can once more be sorted by size, and the flat list view has been re-introduced. The tool is now more friendly to low-resolution devices (such as the Eee): the package pane can be resized, and the large grey banner at the top of the tool is not displayed at lower resolutions.

[править] New LAMP metapackage

A metapackage (task package) has been added to this pre-release to allow easy installation of a complete set of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl / Python) packages, making it simpler than ever to set up a typical web server on a Mandriva Linux system. This package and all its dependencies are present on the Free edition of this pre-release.

[править] Improved sound hardware support

This pre-release includes the latest version of the ALSA sound driver collection along with several post-release fixes, adding or improving support for many newer sound devices (particularly newer variants of the HDA codec, commonly found in recently released laptop systems).

[править] Available KDE 4.0.2

The KDE 4 release available from the official /contrib repository (KDE 3 is still the default version) has been updated to 4.0.2, bringing many improvements and bug fixes over the previous 4.0.1.

This pre-release is available:

  • as a Free edition for the x86-32 and x86-64 architectures, on one DVD or on three CDs, with a traditional installer
  • as a One (KDE-based) and One (GNOME-based) combined live / install CD edition, for the x86-32 architecture (will be released March 20th)

[править] Testing wanted

You are encouraged to test and comment on this pre-release. Feedback should be posted in the form of bug reports to Bugzilla, or if it is not a type of feedback that can be expressed as a bug report, to the Cooker mailing list or to the Mandriva Forums.

  • Check that all your hardware is supported. Note that the Free editions of this release candidate only include free software. Proprietary drivers for components which require or can use them - especially for ATI and NVIDIA video cards, Intel Centrino wireless adapters, and HSF modems - are available from the Cooker non-free repository. Follow the instructions at Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software#Making_more_applications_available to configure this and other repositories. It should be noted that if you continue to use these repositories after the release of Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring, you will then be following the development of the next release of Mandriva Linux. If you wish to follow development of 2008 Spring and then remain with a 2008 Spring system, you must change your repositories at the time 2008 Spring is released.
  • Test that all NTFS drives and partitions are mounted using NTFS-3G and you can write to them.
  • If you had problems with sound support on Mandriva Linux 2008 or earlier pre-releases of Mandriva Linux 2008 Spring, please try this pre-release and see if they have now been resolved.
  • See if the support for multimedia keys works on your system, and if not, please report this.
  • Check that PulseAudio detects all your sound devices and that you can play sound from all applications with no problems.
  • Test hibernation functionality, both on laptops and desktops.
  • Test that printers are easily and correctly configured. USB printers should be detected automatically by the system, and a notification bubble should appear.
  • Test that rpmdrake works correctly: the changes introduced in this pre-release are major and may potentially have introduced some problems.
  • Report any missing or unwanted software. Please take care to see if these issues have already been filed.
