[edit] Testing Candidate Updates
When an issue in Mandriva Linux 2007 is identified, the maintainer of the package concerned may build a package he believes will fix the bug, and upload it to a certain Mandriva software repository named /main/testing which is dedicated to testing potential fixes for such issues. This package can then be tested by users affected by the issue and by the Mandriva quality assurance team. If this testing determines that the package resolves the issue and does not cause any new ones, the package will be issued as an official update which will be provided to all Mandriva Linux 2007 users via MandrivaUpdate.
If you are affected by an issue for which a candidate update package is available and you would like to help test the candidate package, you may configure your system so the Mandriva package management tools will recognize the /main/testing repository as a source of installable packages. For instructions on how to do this, please see installing and removing software (advanced use: backports and candidate updates).
There is also a /contrib/testing repository which performs the same function for packages in the /contrib section (although please note that we do not guarantee issues with /contrib packages will be fixed, the maintainers of each package may choose whether to issue updates at their own discretion). Configuring this repository is covered on the same page.
[edit] Installing Updates
Updates for packages in the /main section of Mandriva Linux can be installed using Mandriva Update. You can run Mandriva Update from the Mandriva Control Center by navigating to the Software Management tab and clicking on the link labelled "Look at available updates and apply any fixes or upgrades to installed packages".
Updates for packages in the /contrib section of Mandriva Linux will not show up through the Mandriva Update interface. To install updates for /contrib packages, refer to the sections "Making more packages available" and "Installing and removing software: rpmdrake & Mandriva Control Center" on this page.
[edit] Resolved Issues
This section contains issues previously listed elsewhere on this page that have now been resolved by official updates.
[edit] GDB
See also update advisory MDKSA-2006:197. Developers may experience restrictions when trying to replace an executable after a gdb session. If a executable has been accessed through gdb, a 'cp' operation will fail with an 'insufficient access' error. The workaround is to remove the faulty executable, then copy or move the new version to its previous place. An updated kernel, 2.6.17.6mdv-1-1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 3rd, 2006 that resolves this issue (among others). Use rpmdrake to fetch and install this updated kernel.
[edit] Jabber server SSL support broken
See also Bug #26940 and update advisory MDKA-2006:047. Support for SSL encryption in the jabber package (which provides the standard server for the Jabber instant messaging protocol) was broken in Mandriva Linux 2007. An updated set of jabber packages, 1.4.4-11mdv2007.0, were released through the official update channels on November 7th, 2006 that resolve this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install these updates.
[edit] Gnuplot fails to render graphical plots
See also Bug #25014 and update advisory MDKA-2006:048. An error in gnuplot causes it to fail with a segmentation fault whenever the user attempts to produce a graphical plot via the default 'x11' term. An updated gnuplot package, gnuplot-4.0.0-11.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 9th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Alacarte does not work
See also Bug #25389 and update advisory MDKA-2006:049. Alacarte, the GNOME menu editor, contains a bug which causes it not to work correctly in Mandriva. The program will run and seem to function correctly, but adding new menu entries and modifying / deleting existing ones will not work. Updated alacarte and desktop-common-data packages, alacarte-0.10.0-4.2mdv2007.0 and desktop-common-data-2007-19.1mdv2007.0, were released through the official update channels on November 9th, 2006 that resolve this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install these updates.
[edit] Ical fails to run
See also Bug #27006 and update advisory MDKA-2006:050. The Ical package in Mandriva Linux 2007 fails to run due to old code that does not work with current versions of TCL, one of the libraries it uses. An updated ical package, ical-2.3.2-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 10th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Webmin does not work correctly
See also Bug #26668 and update advisory MDKA-2006:051. A patch that was applied to webmin 1.290 to give support for Mandriva 2007.0 causes it to ignore all the existing webmin config-mandrake-linux files. This prevents most modules (network config, mysql, etc) from working. An updated webmin package, webmin-1.290-4.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 13th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] opensc does not work with Oberthur smart cards
See also Bug #26630 and update advisory MDKA-2006:052. The version of opensc shipped in Mandriva Linux 2007, 0.11.1, fails to work with Oberthur smart cards, which worked with previous versions of opensc. A fix for this problem was provided by the opensc authors but was not ready in time for Mandriva Linux 2007. An updated opensc package, opensc-0.11.1-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 13th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] dbus system socket incorrectly named
See also Bug #27160 and update advisory MDKA-2006:053. The system socket in the version of the dbus system message bus provided with Mandriva Linux 2007 is incorrectly named /var/run/dbus/system_dbus_socket. The correct name is /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket. This does not cause any problems with official Mandriva Linux 2007 packages, but may cause problems for third party packages or for users who compile recent versions of applications that rely on dbus. As renaming the socket would be too potentially dangerous to other packages, we have instead decided to fix this issue by setting the DBUS_SYSTEM_BUS_ADDRESS environment variable to point to the incorrect /var/run/dbus/system_dbus_socket location. Applications should then respect this variable and correctly locate the socket. An updated dbus package, dbus-0.92-8.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 24th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Audacity menu issue with French localization
See also Bug #27004 and update advisory MDKA-2006:054. If you have your system set to the French locale, menu items which contained accented characters do not show up in the Audacity sound editor. This is because the French translation file was not in the correct character encoding. An updated audacity package, audacity-1.3.0-14.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 28th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Cannot run rpmdrake (Install, Remove & Update Software) from system menus
See also Bug #26383 and update advisory MDKA-2006:055. An error in the menu entry for rpmdrake, the software installation and removal tool, means that it cannot be run from the system menus in Mandriva Linux 2007. Clicking on the menu entry gives the error "Impossible to run unknown 'Install' program". A workaround is to launch the application from the Mandriva Control Center instead. An updated rpmdrake package, rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Mandriva Update crashes when installing updates when urpmi.recover is in use
See also Bug #26742 and update advisory MDKA-2006:055. An error in the rpmdrake package can cause Mandriva Update (which is in fact a special case of the rpmdrake application) to crash on systems where the urpmi.recover rollback system introduced in Mandriva Linux 2007 is in use. An updated rpmdrake package, rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Package media configuration tool fails to run if urpmi.cfg does not exist
See also Bug #27336 and update advisory MDKA-2006:055. In Mandriva Linux 2007, drakrpm-edit-media, the graphical tool for configuring package media (the repositories from which rpmdrake and urpmi retrieve and install packages), contained a bug which caused it to abort on startup if the file /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg does not exist. This behaviour is incorrect as the tool is fully capable of creating this file from scratch. A workaround is to define a single media with the command line urpmi.addmedia tool before using drakrpm-edit-media. An updated rpmdrake package, rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Problems with non-English languages in rpmdrake
See also Bug #18629,
Bug #25130 and
Bug #26099 and update advisory MDKA-2006:055. Problems in rpmdrake's support for UTF-8 text encoding can cause it to print error messages containing garbage characters on systems using non-English languages, especially languages which use character sets substantially different from English (for example, Chinese or Hebrew). A separate bug -
Bug #26099 - could cause rpmdrake to crash when it encountered errors in UTF-8 encoded text in package metadata. An updated rpmdrake package, rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Various problems with updates using rpmdrake in MandrivaUpdate mode
See also Bug #25271,
Bug #26135 and
Bug #27268 and update advisory MDKA-2006:055. Many users noted several problems with MandrivaUpdate (which is actually just a 'special' version of rpmdrake) in Mandriva Linux 2007. In contrast to previous versions of MandrivaUpdate, there is no 'select all' checkbox, which makes selecting all the updates available a repetitive and tiresome task. When only one update was available, it could not be selected - but the same update could be selected and installed correctly if other updates were also available. Finally, the 'all updates' filter was broken and did not show all available security, bugfix and normal updates.
Possible workarounds for these problems include using old_rpmdrake, available from contrib, which is the previous generation of rpmdrake as used in Mandriva Linux 2006, or using the command line urpmi command. An updated rpmdrake package, rpmdrake-3.19-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] drakbackup archiver configuration not respected
See also Bug #26705 and update advisory MDKA-2006:056. A bug in the drakbackup backup tool shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 caused it not to respect the user's choice of archiver - whatever the user chose, drakbackup would still attempt to use star. An updated drakxtools package, drakxtools-10.4.81-2.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Cannot re-block ports with drakfirewall
See also Bug #27295 and update advisory MDKA-2006:056. A bug in the drakfirewall firewall configuration wizard means that once you open a port via drakfirewall, you cannot close it again with drakfirewall. Although the wizard appears to complete correctly, the port is not closed, and running the wizard again will show it still open. The workaround for this problem is to correct the /etc/shorewall/rules.drakx file directly. An updated drakxtools package, drakxtools-10.4.81-2.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Scanning functionality of HP multi-function devices not detected
See also Bug #26567 and update advisory MDKA-2006:056. A bug in Mandriva Linux 2007 means that the scanning feature of all HP multifunction devices is not recognized: the printing function of the device will work correctly, but scannerdrake cannot configure the scanning function. A workaround is to manually install the sane, xsane and libsane-hpaio1 packages. An updated drakxtools package, drakxtools-10.4.81-2.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on November 29th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Clamav complains of being outdated
See also Bug #27373 and update advisory MDKA-2006:057. Users have reported that since an upstream update to clamav - 0.88.6 - was released, the clamav included in Mandriva Linux 2007 - 0.88.5 - has been issuing warnings about being out of date. Despite the fact that there are no actual known security issues with clamav 0.88.5, we will provide 0.88.6 as an update to suppress these messages. An updated clamav package, clamav-0.88.6-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on December 1st, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Powermanga does not start
See also Bug #23612 and update advisory MDKA-2006:058. The package for the game Powermanga included in Mandriva Linux 2007 was missing some files, which caused the game to fail to start. An updated powermanga package, powermanga-0.80-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on December 8th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Incomplete dependencies for Tomboy on x86-64 architecture
See also Bug #26399 and update advisory MDKA-2006:063. The tomboy package included in Mandriva Linux 2007 was built at a time when a bug in the build system prevented correct calculation of package dependencies. This resulted in the dependencies for the x86-64 variant of the package being incorrect, which means that when you install tomboy on x86-64 via urpmi or rpmdrake, some other necessary packages will not be installed. If you do not install them manually, tomboy will consequently fail to run. The workaround for this issue is to manually install the mono, gnome-sharp2 and gmime-sharp packages. An updated tomboy package, tomboy-0.4.1-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on December 13th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] SD cards not automounted in some systems
See also Bug #26915 and update advisory MDKA-2006:065. In systems with an SD card reader supported by the sdhci module, a bug in Mandriva Linux 2007 can cause SD cards not to be automatically mounted (made available to the user) on insertion. An updated hal package, hal-0.5.7.1-9.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on December 14th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update. Please note that the advisory's statement that this update fixes the issue with auto-mounting of LUKS-encrypted devices is not correct: a full fix for this issue also requires an update to udev, which has not yet happened.
[edit] Beagle fails to index Evolution email
See also Bug #26939 and update advisory MDKA-2006:066. The beagle-evolution package, when installed, should allow the Beagle desktop search system to index all email stored by Evolution. However, an error in the evolution-sharp package causes this to fail. An updated evolution-sharp package, evolution-sharp-0.11.1-4.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on December 14th, 2006 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Jmicron JMB363 IDE controller not supported
See also Bug #27068 and update advisory MDKSA-2007:002. A Jmicron JMB363 IDE controller is often used on Intel 965 chipset-based Core 2 Duo motherboards. There are no drivers for this controller in kernel 2.6.17, as shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007. Consequently, there is no support for IDE devices on any motherboard using this controller. In many cases this will mean the product cannot be installed from CD / DVD, as optical drives are often IDE-based. On some motherboards, this issue can be worked around by setting the IDE controller to AHCI mode in the system BIOS. Please see your motherboard manual for more details on this.
Another possible workaround is to set the kernel parameter all-generic-ide. For information on how to set kernel parameters during installation and then for future booting, see the Installation and Kernel sections above.
An updated kernel package, kernel-2.6.17.8mdv-1-1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 2nd, 2007 that resolves this issue by including a backported driver for this chipset. Kernel updates are not installed automatically by MandrivaUpdate on Mandriva Linux. If you are experiencing this problem but managed to install the distribution (for instance by using an SATA optical drive, or the alternative hard disk or network installation methods), you can install the updated kernel by running the software installation tool, rpmdrake, and searching for 'kernel'.
[edit] Samba access control by user group does not work
See also Bug #27395 and update advisory MDKA-2007:001. An administrator should be able to allow access to a share to a group of users by entering +<group_name> as a value for the 'valid users' directive for an entry in /etc/samba/smb.conf, like so:
valid users = +users
However, in the version of Samba shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007.0, this does not work. An updated set of samba packages, samba-3.0.23d-2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 4th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Poor support for Windows 95 / 98 / ME and OS/2 shares in the cifs filesystem provided by Samba
See also Bug #25325 and update advisory MDKA-2007:001. Samba provides the cifs filesystem driver which allows a CIFS (sometimes known as SMB) share to be mounted on the local filesystem. The alternative smbfs implementation of this system, provided by the kernel, is deprecated in recent times and use of cifs is encouraged instead. Mandriva Linux 2007 shipped with Samba 3.0.23b. The cifs support in this version of Samba has several issues that were fixed in later releases, including issues which rendered its support for shares provided by Windows 9x and OS/2 machines more or less unusable. An updated set of samba packages, samba-3.0.23d-2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 4th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] SWAT dies on login
See also Bug #26122 and update advisory MDKA-2007:001. The SWAT administration tool for Samba dies on login in Mandriva Linux 2007.0 due to an error in the configuration of PAM authentication for Samba. The problem can be manually fixed by editing the file /etc/pam.d/samba as follows:
Replace:
#%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_nologin.so auth include service=system-auth account include service=system-auth session include service=system-auth
With:
#%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth session include system-auth
An updated set of samba packages, samba-3.0.23d-2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 4th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Cannot create zip archives from KDE
See also Bug #26306 and update advisory MDKA-2007:002. A bug in the kdeutils-ark package made it is impossible to create a zip format archive using KDE's built-in method (so from Konqueror, or from ark directly, or any other method that relies on ark) in Mandriva Linux 2007. An updated set of kdeutils packages, kdeutils-3.5.4-7.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 4th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] 3D accelerated applications crash on Intel i965g video chipset
See also Bug #26082 and update advisory MDKA-2007:004. Some users reported problems using 3D acceleration on Intel i965g video chipsets with Mandriva Linux 2007. Applications would segfault instead of running correctly, including glxinfo. An updated set of mesa packages, 6.5-18.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 9th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] OpenOffice.org not associated with some Microsoft Works file types
See also Bug #27616 and update advisory MDKSA-2007:006. The OpenOffice.org office suite is capable of opening Microsoft Works files, but the OpenOffice.org shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 was not associated with all these file types (so double-clicking on one of these files would not open it in OpenOffice.org, as it should). An updated set of openoffice.org packages, openoffice.org-2.0.4-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 10th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] nmap does not work as root
See also Bug #27152 and update advisory MDKA-2007:005. The version of nmap shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 was built against the system copies of the libpcap and libdnet libraries. However, nmap actually requires changes to be made to these libraries which have not yet been made to the upstream versions, and consequently should be compiled against its own built-in copies of these libraries. This problem causes nmap not to work as the root user: it would simply freeze up. An updated nmap package, nmap-4.11-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 11th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] OpenOffice.org Writer not included on Discovery menus
See also Bug #27084 and update advisory MDKA-2007:006. When using the Discovery menus - the simplified menu layout used by default in Mandriva Linux Discovery and also available via the Mandriva Control Center on other editions - OpenOffice.org Writer does not appear in the Office category. An updated desktop-common-data package, desktop-common-data-2007-20.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 11th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] dkms-lirc package does not work (lirc_parallel module fails to build) on multi-processor systems
See also Bug #26764 and update advisory MDKA-2007:007. The dkms-lirc package included in Mandriva Linux 2007 does not work on multi-processor systems. Some missing files cause the lirc_parallel module to fail to build. This issue will be fixed with an official update. Please note that working lirc modules are already present in all Mandriva kernels, and also kernel-multimedia and kernel-tmb, making it unusual for anyone to need the dkms-lirc package. You should only use it if you are attempting to install a stock upstream kernel, or some other third party kernel that lacks lirc modules. An updated dkms-lirc package, dkms-lirc-0.8.1-0.20060722.4.2mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 11th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Issues with Bluetooth (PIN code not requested)
See also Bug #24359 and update advisory MDKA-2007:008. Mandriva Linux 2007 includes the latest version (3.2) of bluez, the Linux Bluetooth support layer. This changed caused problems with the system for running an application to ask for PIN codes when pairing or authenticating with another bluetooth device, rendering this operation difficult. An updated bluez-utils package, bluez-utils-3.4-4.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 11th, 2007 that resolves this issue by ensuring the PIN code will be requested when necessary. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update. You may still experience your system not being discoverable by other bluetooth devices: refer to Issues with Bluetooth discoverability, below, for a workaround for this problem.
[edit] perl-SOAP-lite (SOAP::Lite) module causes crash if loaded with perl-UNIVERSAL-require (UNIVERSAL::require) module
See also Bug #27906 and update advisory MDKA-2007:009. The package for the SOAP::Lite perl module shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 (named perl-SOAP-lite according to Mandriva naming conventions) makes use of auto-generated methods whose name clashes with methods exported by the UNIVERSAL::require module. As a consequence, using the two modules simultaneously will result in an immediate program crash. An updated perl-soap-lite package, perl-SOAP-Lite-0.69-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 15th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] wvstreams cannot be installed
See also Bug #28200 and update advisory MDKA-2007:010. The package of the wvstreams library released with Mandriva Linux 2007 was built against version 0.9.7 of openssl. However, the version of openssl included in Mandriva Linux 2007 was 0.9.8. It is consequently impossible to install wvstreams (specifically, the package libwvstreams3.74) cleanly. There is no known workaround for this issue. An updated libwvstreams3.74 package, libwvstreams3.74-3.74.0-7.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 15th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Tripwire hangs while generating keys
See also Bug #26504 and update advisory MDKA-2007:011. The version of Tripwire shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 hangs indefinitely when attempting to generate keys during the setup process, apparently due to the use of standard compiler optimizations. An updated tripwire package, tripwire-2.4.0.1-4.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 16th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Help button in Mandriva software management tools leads to broken link
See also Bug #27037 and update advisory MDKA-2007:014. Due to changes in the structure of the documentation, the Help buttons of the Software Management tools led to broken links. An updated mandriva-doc-common package, mandriva-doc-common-2007-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on January 22nd, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] GNOME terminal gets bigger and bigger when switching tabs
See also Bug #26385 and update advisory MDKA-2007:016. Some users have encountered a bug in the gnome-terminal package provided with Mandriva Linux 2007 which causes the terminal to grow larger each time the user switches tabs, eventually becoming so big it consumes or exceeds the size of the screen. There is no known workaround for this issue besides continually resizing the window manually. An updated gnome-terminal package, gnome-terminal-2.16.1-1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on February 26th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] Methane cannot be installed
See also Bug #26708 and update advisory MDKA-2007:021. A bug in the package for methane, a game, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 meant that the package could not be installed, complaining that it conflicted with itself. An updated methane package, methane-1.4.6-8.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on March 22nd, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] autofs cannot be used with LDAP
See also Bug #28113 and update advisory MDKA-2007:023. A bug in the package for autofs, an auto-mounting system, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 made it impossible to use with the LDAP authentication system. If the kernel-source or kernel-source-stripped packages are installed on your system, you must also update these to match the updated kernel.
[edit] GTK+ applications crash with invalid theme
See also Bug #27013 and update advisory MDKSA-2007:039. There is a bug in the GTK+ libraries shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 which causes GTK+-based applications (which includes all the Mandriva Linux configuration tools, for example) to crash (instead of falling back to the default theme) when an invalid icon theme is selected. This most commonly happens when the user selects a custom icon theme in KDE which has no GTK+ equivalent. The workaround is to select a KDE icon theme which does not cause this problem - for instance, Crystal SVG. An updated gtk+2.0 set of packages, gtk+2.0-2.10.3-5.3mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on February 7th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

[edit] Spamassassin database not created if auto-whitelist feature enabled
See also Bug #27424 and update advisory MDKSA-2007:049. A bug in the default configuration file for the spamassassin spam filter in Mandriva Linux 2007 means that, if the administrator enables the auto-whitelist feature, spamd will not create a database. Specifically, the auto_whitelist_path variable of /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf was set to /var/spool/spamassassin where it should in fact be set to /var/spool/spamassassin/auto-whitelist. This results in the following error message in the mail logs: "config: SpamAssassin failed to parse line, "/var/spool/spamassassin" is not valid for "auto_whitelist_path", skipping: auto_whitelist_path /var/spool/spamassassin". The workaround is to manually correct this configuration option. An updated spamassassin package, spamassassin-3.1.8-0.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on February 23rd, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.

See also Bug #27077 and update advisory MDKA-2007:066. The version of the perl-DBD-mysql module in Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which causes it not correctly to close active statement handles. One of the more serious consequences of this is that Bugzilla will fill your web server log with error messages, if you have it installed. An updated perl-DBD-mysql package, perl-DBD-mysql-3.0008-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on June 25th, 2007 that resolves this issue. Use MandrivaUpdate to fetch and install this update.
[edit] X crashes after display resolution is changed when VESA driver is in use
See also Bug #28717 and update advisory MDKA-2007:069. A bug in the X.org generic VESA video driver means that when the resolution is changed in a running X session (via xrandr), the X server will crash. This driver is used as a failsafe, or for cards which have no native driver, or sometimes in virtual machine environments. The only workaround for this issue is to avoid changing resolution in a running X session. An updated x11-driver-video-vesa package, x11-driver-video-vesa-1.2.1-2.1mdv2007.0, was released through the official update channels on June 25th, 2007 that resolves this issue. [edit] Missing data in vym
See also Bug #29536. The package for vym, a mind mapping tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 inadvertently omits several files, including icons, flags, localizations, demos and exports. This renders the package near-unusable.
We have chosen to fix this issue by providing a fixed package through the /contrib/updates repository. The updated package, vym-1.8.1-2mdv2007.0, was released on June 7th, 2007. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.
[edit] Installation
General instructions: installation problems often require the use of kernel parameters. To specify kernel parameters during installation, simply boot the installer as usual. On the very first interactive screen, where you are presented with the options "Boot from Hard Disk", "Installation" and so on, highlight "Installation" and then just type the kernel parameter required. You will see it being added to the "Boot Options" text box near the bottom of the screen. When you have typed the required kernel parameters, simply hit Enter.
[edit] Installer crashes if xpat2 package is selected
See also Bug #26545. The installation process will crash and fail if the xpat2 package is selected for installation. The only workaround is to ensure that this package is not selected.
[edit] Installer cannot run on ASUS A7V600-X, Dell Inspiron 1501
See also Bug #27069. On the ASUS A7V600-X motherboard, the Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop and possibly other systems, Mandriva Linux 2007 cannot be installed due to problems with the motherboard's support for the MSI interrupt mechanism. To resolve this issue, specify the pci=nomsi kernel parameter for the installer. During the installation process, the parameter should also be added to the default parameters for future booting of the system. You can do this in the bootloader configuration stage of the post-installation phase. For the A7V600-X you may also need to change some BIOS settings: make sure INTERRUPT MODE is set to APIC, and Plug 'n' Play mode is set to NO. It is also recommended that you remove the acpi=ht noapic nolapic kernel parameters both for the installer and for future boots of the system.
[edit] Installer does not see hard disk on Dell Optiplex sx280 and Optiplex gx100
See also Bug #23279. On the Dell Optiplex sx280 and gx100, a BIOS quirk causes the Linux kernel not to recognize the IDE controller (and thus the hard disk, making installation impossible). To work around this problem, specify the pnpacpi=off pnpbios=off kernel parameters for the installer and also for future boots (you can do this in the bootloader configuration stage of the post-install phase). One user has also reported that setting the drive controller to COMBINED mode in the BIOS on the sx280 also works around this problem.
[edit] Cannot configure network interface during install
See also Bug #26387. Configuration of network interfaces for drivers provided via dkms packages may fail during installation. The dkms driver packages will be installed correctly by the installer, but it will fail to detect the installation achievement. Such interfaces must be reconfigured after installation.
[edit] Updating to Mandriva Linux 2007 x86-64 via urpmi
See also Bug #26951. In previous releases of Mandriva Linux, several i586 packages that were usually required by x86-64 users were included in the x86-64 media (repositories). In Mandriva Linux 2007, this is no longer the case: the x86-64 media contain only x86-64 packages. Users who attempt to upgrade from an earlier x86-64 release of Mandriva Linux to Mandriva Linux 2007 via urpmi (by defining 2007 urpmi media and using urpmi --auto-select) will find that their i586 packages are not updated, unless they add i586 media as well as x86-64 media before doing the update. This can lead to packages which use i586 libraries not working. If you wish to upgrade to the x86-64 edition of Mandriva Linux 2007 via urpmi, please ensure you set up i586 media as well as x86-64 media. If you already did such an upgrade and are experiencing problems with some applications not working, you should add i586 urpmi media and run urpmi --auto-select again.
Upgrades via DrakX (the Mandriva Linux installer program) should not be affected by this issue.
[edit] FTP installation fails due to paths with double slashes
See also Bug #26497. A regression in the FTP installation module makes the installer use paths with double slashes, for instance i586//install/stage2/mdkinst.clp. Some FTP servers cannot handle double slashes in pathnames and will fail to work. We are therefore providing a fixed boot.iso which does not generate paths with double slashes.
[edit] no urpmi.cfg after HD install
See also Bug #26609. An error in the installer means that if you do a hard disk installation of Mandriva Linux 2007, the file /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg is not created. This file defines the software repositories that allow you to use urpmi or rpmdrake to install extra software after installation. If you plan on installing Mandriva Linux 2007 via the hard disk installation method, use this installer patch. For instructions on using installer patches, see the Installer Patches page.
[edit] Kernel
General instructions: kernel problems often require the use of kernel parameters. To set up kernel parameters to be used at every boot, run Mandriva Control Center and go to the Boot tab. Click on "Set up how the system boots". Click on "next". Choose the menu entry you usually use to boot the system (normally just 'linux', the default choice) and click 'Modify'. Then type the required kernel parameters into the 'Append' box, click 'OK', and then click 'Finish'.
[edit] System sometimes hangs during boot with USB devices connected
See also Bug #24683. Many users have noticed a problem with Mandriva Linux 2007 where the system will sometimes hang during boot when USB devices are connected. Sometimes, boot completes successfully.
The only workaround for this bug is to boot with as few USB devices connected as possible - only those necessary for the system to start up. Then reconnect the remaining USB devices once the system has booted successfully.
[edit] kernel-enterprise incompatible with ACPI suspend
See also Bug #27071. Mandriva Linux 2007's support for PAE, an i586 instruction set extension used to allow support for over 4GB of physical memory, is incompatible with the ACPI suspend mechanism. This means you cannot use ACPI suspend with kernel-enterprise (the Mandriva kernel variant which allows support for more than 4GB of RAM). Currently you must choose between support for more than 4GB of RAM or support for ACPI suspend, you cannot have both. This issue may be fixed with a future kernel update.
[edit] XFS filesystem issues
See also Bug #24716. Some users have encountered a bug in XFS support in 2007 which can result in failure to read the disk and also possible data loss when the filesystem is under heavy load, for instance when attempting to transfer a large amount of data using rsync. It is possible this issue may be fixed by developments in the upstream kernel. If so, the fix will be added to the Mandriva kernel as an official update.
[edit] Slow internet response (particularly web browsing)
See also Bug #27070. There is a known problem with all Linux distributions that enable IPv6 networking (the new standard for network addresses which uses a longer, hexadecimal address format to provide a much larger number of possible addresses. The old standard is IPv4, which gives the four-groups-of-three-digits decimal address format most people are familiar with, e.g. 216.105.167.65). Some systems and networks do not cope well if your system has IPv6 networking enabled. If you experience sluggish response on the Internet - especially when browsing web sites - and cannot find the cause, you should try disabling IPv6. To do this, edit the file /etc/sysconfig/network, add the following line, and reboot:
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
See also Bug #27073. If this does not resolve the problem, there is another possibility. Most Linux distributions, including Mandriva, enable a kernel feature called TCP window scaling. This is useful for increasing the speed of transfers over very high bandwidth connections. However, a change was made in the default values for TCP window scaling in kernel 2.6.17, which seems to cause very slow network performance for some users with some internet sites. To see if TCP window scaling is the problem, you can disable it with this command:
sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0
If this resolves the problem, you can make the change permanent by adding this line to the file /etc/sysctl.conf :
net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling=0
This will disable TCP window scaling at every boot. If you do use a very high bandwidth network connection - for instance, you regularly transfer large files over a local 100Mbit or 1Gbit network - you may notice that disabling TCP window scaling results in slower performance over this connection. In this case, you could try restoring the pre-2.6.17 default settings rather than disabling TCP window scaling entirely. To do this, add the following line to /etc/sysctl.conf, instead of (not in addition to) the previously suggested one:
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem=4096 87380 174760
This will change the default window scaling settings at every boot.
[edit] Issue with networking/firewire on Zepto/Compal models including Znote 6515WD
See also Bug #18938. Using these laptops you will get "Disabling IRQ# 11" (or similar) resulting in broken networking.
After installation this can be fixed by making a few changes to the /etc/modprobe.conf file:
blacklist ohci1394 blacklist ieee1394
[edit] IPv6 connections do not work correctly
See also Bug #30605. Due to a change in glibc, connection attempts do not attempt to bind to the IPv6 socket before falling back on IPv4, as they should. This causes IPv6 connections not to work correctly. This problem can be avoided by creating the file /etc/gai.conf with the following contents:
label ::1/128 0 label ::/0 1 label 2002::/16 2 label ::/96 3 label ::ffff:0:0/96 4 precedence ::1/128 50 precedence ::/0 40 precedence 2002::/16 30 precedence ::/96 20 precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 10
[edit] Sound always plays through speakers on Zepto / Compal Znote 6515WD
See also FIXME. On this laptop model, sound always plays through the internal speakers even if you plug a pair of headphones or speakers into the headphone / speaker output jack. If you want to be able to toggle between using the internal speakers and the headphone / speaker output jack, there is a script that can help you. To use it, first download the script, filename 'speaker'. Open a console and navigate to the directory where you saved the script. Now run this command, to make it executable:
chmod ugo+x speaker
Next, run the command su and enter your root password to gain root privileges. Then run this command, to make root the owner of the script:
chown root.root speaker
Finally, run this command to move the file to the /usr/bin directory, so you can run it from anywhere:
mv speaker /usr/bin
You can now switch between the internal speakers and the headphone jack with these two commands:
speaker on
speaker off
Please note that this script will not work for all laptops that display the same symptom (sound always playing through internal speakers). For many models, you can toggle between the internal speakers and the headphone / speaker jack by toggling one of the switches in the KDE or GNOME volume control applets.
[edit] ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting.
See also Bug #27074. The hardware encryption support in the ipw2200 module (which supports recent Intel Centrino wireless networking chipsets) is known to be buggy in some cases, causing connectivity issues which result in this error in the system logs. To fix this add the following to the /etc/modprobe.conf file:
options ipw2200 hwcrypto=0
[edit] PC Card devices not found
See also Bug #26112. Users of some (particularly new) laptop models may find that the system does not seem to recognise PC Card devices at all. If you are having trouble with PC Card devices, check whether they show up in the output of the command lspci run as root. If not, you may be suffering from this problem. To fix it, you can try rebooting after adding the following kernel parameter (for instructions on using kernel parameters, see the start of this section):
pci=assign-busses
This is known to be a problem on the following systems: Acer Travelmate 2410 series (2413).
[edit] Broadcom wireless network devices not working / unstable
Mandriva Linux 2007.0 includes the bcm43xx driver for Broadcom wireless network chipsets. Broadcom chips are frequently used in systems with integrated wireless networking, for instance laptops. Your system's manual / technical specifications document should tell you the manufacturer of your wireless chipset.
The bcm43xx driver is a relatively new development and is based on reverse engineering, not official Broadcom technical specifications (which are not provided). The driver is therefore incomplete, contains some bugs and does not work correctly with all varieties of Broadcom chipsets. If you have a Broadcom wireless chipset, Mandriva is using the bcm43xx driver, and you are not satisfied with its performance, you may consider using ndiswrapper as an alternative. ndiswrapper is a module which uses Windows drivers to provide wireless networking on Linux. This has obvious compromises in terms of licensing, but in some cases will give better results than the bcm43xx driver. ndiswrapper should be included and available as an option in the networking configuration tool (you can choose either to use the bcm43xx driver or 'a Windows driver', which means using ndiswrapper).
[edit] Some laptops (VAIO VGN-FS115B, Asus W6A) run slowly on AC power
See also Bug #24598. Some laptop models, including the Sony VAIO VGN-FS115B and Asus W6A, run Mandriva Linux 2007.0 at the expected speed when running from battery power, but run much slower when the AC power adapter is connected and they are running from mains power. It is not currently known what causes this problem. A workaround is to disable local APIC on boot. To do this, go to the Mandriva Control Center. Go to the Boot tab, and click on 'Set up how the system boots'. Click on 'Advanced'. Uncheck the box labelled 'Enable Local APIC'. Click 'Next'. Click 'Finish'. Close down all open applications, and reboot the system.
[edit] Hardware support
[edit] Incorrect display resolution on machines with Intel graphics chipsets: XFdrake cannot install 915resolution package
Certain laptops with Intel display adapters have a problem where the BIOS does not correctly report the available graphical resolutions to the operating system, making it impossible to configure the correct display resolution for the laptop's flat panel (flat panel displays have a single native resolution which should always be used: displaying at any other resolution results in a considerable drop in display quality). On Linux, the 915resolution program exists to resolve this problem: it corrects the list of available resolutions provided by the BIOS, enabling the system to use the correct resolution.
Unfortunately, this package was inadvertently left out of the Powerpack and Discovery editions of Mandriva Linux 2007. If you cannot configure the correct resolution for your laptop, and XFdrake (the graphics configuration tool) complains of being unable to install the 915resolution package, please use the software media manager application to set up your system to download and install packages from our public package mirrors in addition to your installation disc(s).
To do this, run the Software Media Manager: open the Mandriva Control Center, and go to the Software Management tab. Click the link titled 'Select from where software packages are downloaded when updating the system'. Click 'yes' when asked if it is OK to continue. Now click the 'Add...' button on the right hand side of the new screen. When asked whether to add 'Official updates' or 'Distribution sources', click 'Distribution sources'. Click 'Yes' in reply to the question about the mirror list. When the mirror list appears, choose a mirror close to your geographical location. Wait for the process to complete. Once this process is complete, XFdrake should be able to download and install the 915resolution package, and enable the correct display resolution.
[edit] Issues with proprietary ATI video driver and 3D acceleration / 3D desktop
See also FIXME ADAM. Many users have reported issues with getting the proprietary ATI video card driver (fglrx) that is included in the commercial editions of Mandriva Linux 2007 to work properly. The most common problem is that the driver will work and render the desktop, but 3D acceleration (and consequently support for the 3D-accelerated desktop features) does not work. Several users have reported that disabling the 'Composite' feature of the driver resolves this problem and allows them to use the 3D capabilities of the card. To disable this feature, open the Mandriva Control Center and go to the "Hardware" tab. Click on "Set up the graphical server". Click on "Options" and deselect the "Enable Translucency (Composite extension)" checkbox. Click on "OK", then click on "Quit". Close the control center and restart the computer.
[edit] Issues with Bluetooth discoverability
See also Bug #24359. Mandriva Linux 2007 includes the latest version (3.2) of bluez, the Linux Bluetooth support layer. Unfortunately, this version made some changes that the KDE and GNOME Bluetooth desktop support applications have not yet entirely caught up with. To use Bluetooth with Mandriva Linux 2007, you may have to run some commands manually.
If you wish to pair with your computer from another Bluetooth device, your computer's Bluetooth adapter must be in discoverable mode. Unfortunately, with the new bluez it is currently not possible to set the computer to be permanently discoverable or to make it discoverable from the KDE or GNOME Bluetooth support applications. You must do it with the following console command:

[edit] LUKS-encrypted removable media not correctly recognized on connection in GNOME
See also Bug #24684. LUKS is a system for encrypting filesystems. GNOME in Mandriva Linux 2007 includes the framework necessary to recognize when a LUKS-encrypted filesystem - for instance, on a USB key - is connected to the system, to prompt the user for the password, and then to make the encrypted partition visible (assuming the password was correctly entered). However, bugs in the udev and hal packages prevent this mechanism from working. This issue will be resolved by the release of fixed hal and udev packages as an official update. A fix for hal is currently available in the /main/updates repository - hal-0.5.7.1-9mdv2007.0 - but this fix is not useful without an accompanying fix for udev. We are working on the udev fix and will provide it as soon as possible.
[edit] DRI not enabled on VIA Unichrome video cards using the openchrome driver
See also Bug #27167. It has been reported that the Mandriva Linux video card configuration utility does not enable DRI (the X.org Direct Rendering Infrastructure, which enabled 3D acceleration on various video cards) for video cards based on the VIA Unichrome chipset and supported by X.org's openchrome video driver. This results in 3D acceleration being disabled, and also results in the glxinfo and drak3d applications failing to run. To enable DRI on these cards, add the following line to the Module section of the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Load "dri"
[edit] Rescue
[edit] Restore Windows Boot Loader is broken
You can do it by hand:
- Choose Go to console
- (Optional) Type loadkeys kbd replacing kbd with your keyboard language (fr for french and be-latin1 for belgian, for instance)
- If you have SATA disks, type drvinst to load the required driver and use sda instead of hda in the next command line
- Use command dd if=/usr/lib/extipl/aldebaran.bin of=/dev/hda, replacing hda with sda or whatever your harddrive is

[edit] Potential issues with the link detection in network drivers
Mandriva Linux 2007 introduces a new parallel initialization system. For more information on this, see the Release Notes. There are some potential problems with this system in certain cases.
Many previously hidden race conditions (a problem where, depending on the speed of your hardware and other possible factors, processes or commands may be run at the wrong time or in the wrong order) appear. In particular, some buggy network drivers are only usable a few seconds after their initialization, but incorrectly inform the system that they are usable immediately. This can cause services that depend on the network being available to start too early. Such services include autofs and ntp. There are various possible solutions:
- disable ifplugd. ifplugd is the daemon used to detect when the network link is available. To disable it, you need to know the name(s) of your network interface(s). You can find this information from the output of the command ifconfig, run as root at a console. For instance, wired ethernet interfaces are usually named ethX, where X is a number - the first such interface is eth0, the second is eth1, and so forth. Wireless interfaces can have various names depending on the driver used, including but not limited to athX and wlanX. Use ifconfig to find the names of all affected network interfaces. To disable ifplugd, you must edit their configuration files. The configuration files can be found in the directory /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ with names in this format: ifcfg-(interface name). For instance, the configuration file for the eth0 interface is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. For each affected interface, edit the appropriate configuration file and add this line:
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes
In the case that there is already a line reading:
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no
simply change the 'no' to 'yes'.
- set a timeout for the affected interfaces. The network initialization system can be configured to wait for a short time after the network driver claims it is available before actually starting any network-dependent systems. To do this, identify the affected interfaces and edit their configuration file(s) (see the instructions in the previous bullet point) and add a line like this:
LINK_DETECTION_DELAY=5
This would set a timeout of 5 seconds. For a longer or shorter timeout, change the 5. The network configuration tool sets a timeout automatically for some drivers which are known to have this problem.
- disable the parallel initialization system. To do this, use nopinit as a kernel parameter. For instructions on using kernel parameters, see the Kernel section above.
For more information on this issue, see Bug #18986.
[edit] Software issues
[edit] Kiosk and Online services issue
Mandriva Linux 2007 does not work with the Mandriva Kiosk and Online services for the moment. For the moment there are no plans to introduce Mandriva Kiosk for Mandriva Linux 2007. The Mandriva Online service at the moment will always show the system as being fully up to date, although updates may in fact be available. An update for the mdkonline package which will resolve this issue is scheduled for the middle of December 2006.
[edit] Switching network profiles causes many services not to start
See also Bug #26562. A bug in the netprofile package, Mandriva's implementation of network profiles, causes many services - including the graphical environment - not to be started on boot if the user switches network profile. Currently the only known workaround for this problem is to start all necessary services by hand, using the service command, for instance:
service xfs start
to start the X Font Server. To make your changes permanent, check the directory /etc/netprofile/profiles/.
To switch to another netprofile, use set-netprofile. The original netprofile is called "default".
You can see all the services that are usually started at boot in the directory /etc/rc5.d/. This issue will be resolved with an official update. Until then, if you are not comfortable starting services manually, we recommend you do not use netprofile.
[edit] LinDVD
After a few minutes of watching a disc, LinDVD simply stops because the license library is in the wrong place and therefore LinDVD runs in demo mode.
To fix this issue run the following commands (as root):
cp /usr/share/lindvd/libivimandriva.so /usr/lib/
ldconfig
For beginners, here is a more detailed explanation: Click on the KDE Menu button, and go to System -> Terminal to open a terminal. Once in the terminal do as you see here ("user" replaces your username):
[user@localhost ~]$ <-This is the prompt, type all of what is displayed after it in this example. [user@localhost ~]$ su Password: <-Type your "root" password here. Nothing is printed on screen as you type, this is a security feature. [root@localhost user]# cp /usr/share/lindvd/libivimandriva.so /usr/lib/ [root@localhost user]# ldconfig [root@localhost user]# <-Wait till you get back to this prompt before closing the terminal.
You can close the terminal. Now restart LinDVD if it was running before typing the above commands.
[edit] Internet connection sharing does not work (squid)
See also Bug #27587. The internet connection sharing wizard in the Mandriva Control Center in Mandriva Linux 2007 does not work as intended. After configuration, connection sharing will work for a short time, but then high system resource usage will be noticed on the connection sharing server, and the sharing will no longer work. This is due to a typographical error in the configuration for the squid web cache proxying server, which is configured as part of internet connection sharing setup: the location for diskd, a subsidiary program used by squid, is specified as /usr/lib/squid/diskd_daemon, whereas it is in fact /usr/lib/squid/diskd-daemon (a hyphen rather than an underscore). The workaround is to adjust the squid configuration file to specify this location correctly. This issue will be fixed by the release of an updated squid package with this error fixed.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: squid-2.6.STABLE1-4.2mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated squid package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #27587.
[edit] Internet connection sharing does not work (bind missing)
See also Bug #28315. The Internet Connection Sharing wizard in Mandriva Linux 2007 relies on the availability of the bind nameserver package. Due to an oversight, this package is not present on the DVD version of the Powerpack edition of Mandriva Linux 2007. Users of this edition will find that the Internet Connection Sharing wizard cannot be completed as the wizard cannot install the bind package.
To resolve this problem, please use the software media manager application to set up your system to download and install packages from our public package mirrors in addition to your installation disc(s).
Once this process is complete, run the Internet Connection Sharing wizard again. It will be able to retrieve and install the bind package from the public mirror you just configured.
[edit] Truetype fonts not correctly imported with drakfont
See also Bug #27506. A bug in drakfont, the Mandriva Linux font import tool, means that when you try to import TrueType fonts, the original TrueType version of the font is not correctly imported. The font is still available to most applications, as drakfont also converts imported fonts to Type1, and this part of the process works correctly. However, Type1 fonts do not render as well as TrueType fonts, so you will noticed that imported fonts seem visually inferior. To work around this issue, you can import fonts manually. As root, copy the fonts to /usr/share/fonts/ttf, then run the following commands:
cd /usr/share/fonts/ttf
ttmkfdir > fonts.scale
mkfontdir
chkfontpath -a /usr/share/fonts/ttf
You can also fix the bug in drakfont by editing /usr/sbin/drakfont as a text file, going to line 333, and changing it from:
system('cd ' . $temp_dir . ' && cp *.ttf ../../ttf; chmod 644 ../../ttf/*ttf') if glob("$temp_dir/*.TTF");
to:
system('cd ' . $temp_dir . ' && cp *.ttf ../../ttf; chmod 644 ../../ttf/*ttf') if glob("$temp_dir/*.ttf");
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: drakxtools-10.4.81-2.3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated drakxtools packages. Please report the results of your test to Bug #27506.
[edit] drakfont sometimes crashes when removing fonts
See also Bug #23344. The package for drakfont, the Mandriva Linux font installation and removal tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which can cause it to crash when removing fonts.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #23344.
[edit] drakfont cannot import Windows (TM) fonts from partitions mounted via FUSE (e.g. ntfs-3g)
See also Bug #28016. The drakfont utility included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug which causes it to be unable to import font from Microsoft Windows (TM) installations on partitions mounted via the FUSE system (for instance, NTFS partitions mounted via ntfs-3g). This issue will be resolved with the release of an official update.
[edit] drakbackup does not exclude all critical files when instructed to (passwd, group, shadow)
See also Bug #28656. The package for drakbackup, the Mandriva Linux backup tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains an option to exclude system files with sensitive information such as user names and passwords from the backup. However, this option did not correctly exclude all such files: /etc/passwd-, /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow- were not excluded.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #28656.
[edit] drakbackup fails when no change has been made to backed up files
See also {{bug|27780}. The package for drakbackup, the Mandriva Linux backup tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which causes it to fail when asked to do a backup if no change has been made to any of the files to be backed up.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: drakxtools-10.4.81-2.3mdv2007.0. [edit] drakconnect and drakroam request firmware installation when using ndiswrapper
See also Bug #25968 and
Bug #27850. The Mandriva network configuration utilities, drakconnect and drakroam, will sometimes request installation of firmware for some wireless network devices even when the ndiswrapper driver is being used and the firmware is not needed.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #25968 or
Bug #27850.
[edit] Wireless connection does not work when using WEP keys
See also Bug #28119. A previous update to the Mandriva Linux 2007 network configuration utilities causes quotation marks to be used around WEP keys in the /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf configuration file. This prevents wpa_supplicant from parsing the entry, and consequently prevents the connection from working.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #28119.
[edit] Banshee may not start on some systems
See also Bug #26183. On some 32-bit systems with the SSE2 feature and for users who do not use GNOME applications (e.g. KDE users), Banshee may fail to start. The workaround is to start 'gst-inspect-0.10' in a terminal. This will create the ~/.gstreamer-0.10 settings directory required by Banshee.
[edit] UTF8 issue when reinstalling and keeping a previous /home that was not in UTF8
When installing instead of upgrading, and keeping a previous /home, the install doesn't convert the /home to UTF8 and some characters might not display properly in filenames.
To solve this issue, save the following convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl script in your /home/UserName/, and run the following commands to convert your /home/UserName/ to UTF8:
cd ~/
chmod u+rx convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl
./convert-filenames-to-utf8.pl
[edit] Webmin does not support squid
See also Bug #27163. The version of webmin provided with Mandriva Linux 2007 is capable of configuring versions of the squid HTTP proxy between 1.1 and 2.5. However, Mandriva Linux 2007 includes squid version 2.6. Consequently, webmin is not capable of configuring squid. We are currently considering possible fixes for this problem and will ship an update to resolve it once a solution has been decided upon. The only known workarounds are manually to install a newer version of webmin, or to configure squid directly.
[edit] Some X-based applications do not launch when run over VNC connections
See also Bug #27169. There is a bug in the tightvnc package included in Mandriva Linux 2007 which causes some X-based applications, including emacs, not to launch when run over a VNC link. The problem is caused by VNC looking for the rgb.txt file, which provides color definitions, in the /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/ directory, while it is in fact located in /usr/share/X11. You can work around the problem by creating a symbolic link. Run this command as root:
ln -s /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/
[edit] rpm incorrectly detects binary packages as source packages
See also Bug #27987. The rpm package manager shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 uses a method for determining whether a package is a source package or a binary package which could result in some binary packages in the old RPM v3 format being incorrectly detected as source packages.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: rpm-4.4.6-12mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated rpm package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #27987.
[edit] rpm fails (segmentation fault) attempting to install some third party packages
See also Bug #27263. It was discovered that the rpm utility shipped in Mandriva Linux 2007 may crash with a segmentation fault if it is used to attempt to install some packages in an older RPM format (the specific package identified as problematic was Applixware Office 5.0). All official Mandriva packages are in the current RPM format and will cause no problems, but some older third party packages may be affected. There is no known workaround for this issue.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #27263.
[edit] Foobillard crashes on startup
See also Bug #23258. A bug in the freetype2 font rendering engine caused foobillard (and possibly other apps as yet unidentified) to crash on startup in Mandriva Linux 2007 with this error: FT_Load_Glyph:error#6. This issue will be resolved by the release of a fixed freetype2 package.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: freetype2-2.2.1-9mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated freetype2 package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #23258.
[edit] Sound-related errors and / or no sound plays in SDL-based applications
A packaging error in the SDL_mixer package included in Mandriva Linux 2007 means the package can be installed without some other packages that should always accompany it. This may result in sound-related error messages or a complete lack of sound in some SDL-based games and applications. The workaround is to install the libsmpeg0.4 package manually.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: SDL_mixer-1.2.7-3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated SDL_mixer package. Please report the results of your test to Per Øyvind Karlsen: pkarlsen AT mandriva DOT com.
[edit] xfig freezes as soon as a tool is used
See also Bug #25250. Due to a packaging error, the xfig drawing application included in Mandriva Linux 2007 will hang as soon as the user attempts to use any tool (either from the palette or via a keyboard shortcut). A workaround for this bug is to launch xfig using this command: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libXaw.so.7 xfig
[edit] Keyboard indicator status incorrect when switching X session
See also Bug #13211. When more than one X session is active and the user switches between them with ctrl-alt-F7-F9, the keyboard indicator lights may show the wrong status (for instance, they will show that Num Lock is off when in fact it is on). This issue will be resolved by the release of an updated x11-driver-input-keyboard package which fixes the problem.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: x11-driver-input-keyboard-1.1.0-3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated x11-driver-input-keyboard package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #13211.
[edit] GNOME power manager applet does not work correctly following suspend / resume cycle
See also Bug #23603. Due to a bug, the GNOME power manager applet (which, for users of the GNOME desktop, displays an icon in the notification area notifying you of your current power status and battery life, and allowing you to suspend or hibernate the system) can fail to work correctly after the system has been suspended or put into hibernation and then resumed. This is because it fails to properly reconnect to the HAL daemon. The workaround for this problem is to quit GNOME power manager and restart it. This issue will be resolved by the release of a new gnome-power-manager package, upgraded to a newer version which resolves this bug.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: gnome-power-manager-2.16.3-1mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated gnome-power-manager package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #23603.
[edit] Xine plugin to access files directly from SMB / CIFS (Windows) shares does not work
See also Bug #29991. The package for xine, a media player, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which prevents the plugin for accessing files directly from SMB / CIFS shared partitions (Windows shares) not to work. The player will crash when attempting to access files in this way. This issue affects all players that use xine as their backend - for instance, amaroK and Totem.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: xine-lib-1.1.2-3.5mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated libxine1 package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #29991.
[edit] Some k3b functions do not work (normalization)
See also Bug #20728. The k3b CD / DVD writing application included with Mandriva Linux 2007 uses other programs for some functions. Specifically, it uses the normalize tool for normalizing sound levels, and the emovix tool for creating auto-playing audio / video discs. However, the k3b package does not depend on these other tools, so it is possible that they will fail due to the tools not being available. The normalize package is available in Mandriva: to enable normalization functions, simply install it (instructions on installing packages are available at Installing and removing software. emovix is not currently available as a package in Mandriva. You can find the tool and help on installing it at its home page.
[edit] Skencil fails to work correctly with text
See also Bug #20899. The package for the drawing application Skencil included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which causes it not to be able to access the system fonts correctly. Consequently, it is impossible to enter text properly in Skencil, and Skencil will consume a high level of system resources if you attempt to use the text tools.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: skencil-0.6.18-0.695.2mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated skencil package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #20899. The updated package also adds Skencil to the system menus.
[edit] Various ncurses-based applications will not run on x86-64 architecture: iptraf, htop, iftop, jnettop, mcabbr
See also Bug #27086 and
Bug #30633. Several applications built on the ncurses library, which provides console rendering functions, fail to run on the x86-64 architecture due to being built against the wrong version of the library. The applications identified so far are iptraf, htop, iftop, jnettop and mcabbr. This issue will be fixed by the release of updated packages built against the correct version of the ncurses library.
Updated packages, iftop-0.17-2mdv2007.0 and htop-0.6.2-3mdv2007.0, were released through the /contrib/updates channel on November 13th, 2006 that resolve this issue for iftop and htop. An updated package, jnettop-0.13.0-1.1mdv2007.0, was released through the /contrib/updates channel on February 8th, 2007 that resolves this issue for jnettop. See the "Installing Updates" section, above, for instructions on installing packages from /contrib/updates.
A candidate fix for mcabbr has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: mcabber-0.8.1-2mdv2007.0. Follow these instructions, then install the updated mcabbr package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #30633.
An update for iptraf is being worked on.
[edit] VBESTATESAVE and VBEPOST options in /etc/sysconfig/suspend do not work
See also Bug #25779. Advanced users who have problems with their systems' screens remaining blank after trying to suspend and resume may have tried changing the VBESTATESAVE and VBEPOST options in the /etc/sysconfig/suspend file in an attempt to resolve this problem. However, these options will do nothing unless the vbetool utility is installed, which may not be the case as nothing requires its installation. If you are attempting to use these options to resolve problems with suspend / restore on your machine, you must first install the vbetool package.
[edit] Balazar does not work
The version of the game Balazar shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007.0 requires version 0.5 of the cerealizer python module. However, Mandriva Linux 2007.0 did not include this version. This issue will be resolved be the release of an updated cerealizer package.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: cerealizer-0.5-1mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated cerealizer package. Please report the results of your test to Olivier Blin (oblin A T mandriva D O T com).
[edit] ctags fails to work if TMPDIR variable is unset
See also Bug #26214. The packaged version of the ctags source code analysis application shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 specifies a non-existent file as the default temporary file. If the TMPDIR environment variable is set, that directory will be used instead, circumventing the problem. However, if it is unset, ctags will try to use the non-existent file and crash with a "cannot find temporary file" error. The workaround is to ensure the TMPDIR environment variable is set when using the application.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: ctags-5.6-3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated ctags package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #26214.
[edit] Stopmotion crashes with certain TV cards (Brooktree bt848 / bt878)
See also Bug #28638. The version of Stopmotion, a stop-motion animation creation system, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug which can cause it to crash when used with Brooktree bt848 / bt878-based TV cards (those using the bttv driver). This bug was fixed in later versions of Stopmotion, and will be fixed in Mandriva Linux 2007 by applying this fix to the version included with the distribution (0.5.3).
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: stopmotion-0.5.3-3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated stopmotion package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #28638.
[edit] Multimedia keys cannot be used (setkeycodes cannot handle keycodes higher than 128)
See also Bug #21741. The console-tools package included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring contains a bug in the setkeycodes utility, making it unable to handle keycodes higher than 128. As the multimedia keys on many modern keyboards have keycodes higher than 128, this makes it effectively impossible to use these keys.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: console-tools-0.2.3-60.1mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated console-tools package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #21741.
[edit] Transcriber cannot be installed
See also Bug #19022. The package for Transcriber, a transcription tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 contained a bug which caused it to be impossible to install. On attempting to install the package, an error message would be displayed to the effect that the package tcLex was required but could not be installed.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /contrib/testing package repository: transcriber-1.5.1-1mdv2007.0. Please note that the updated package is named transcriber not Transcriber. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /contrib/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated transcriber package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #19022.
[edit] Unison crashes attempting to sync
See also Bug #24811. The package for Unison, a synchronization tool, included with Mandriva Linux 2007 is missing a dependency. This can cause it to crash when attempting to synchronize, with the following error (repeated several times):
(unison:3508): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
To resolve this problem, please install the package x11-font-schumacher-misc.
[edit] 3D-accelerated desktop (AIGLX, Xgl)
[edit] 3D-accelerated desktop not starting under GNOME
Some users, especially those upgrading or preserving /home directories from previous versions of Mandriva, may find themselves unable to enable the 3D-accelerated desktop under GNOME. Even after running drak3d and selecting one of the 3D-accelerated desktop options, on login to GNOME the native window manager (metacity) will start up and no 3D desktop effects will be observed. This problem can usually be rectified by removing the file ~/.gnome2/session . We recommend you simply move this file somewhere else (for example, your home directory), rather than deleting it, so it can be restored if problems arise as a result of its removal. Once you have removed the file, log out of GNOME and log back in, and you should observe that compiz is started instead of metacity, and the 3D desktop effects appear.
[edit] 3D-accelerated desktop and video playback
See also Bug #25572. If you use the 3D accelerated desktop technologies included in Mandriva Linux 2007 (AIGLX or Xgl), you may notice that video playback does not work very well - moving, resizing, maximising the video window will cause problems, or you may see strange artifacts in or through the video. You may also notice that, if you use the 'cube' feature of compiz, the video does not play while you rotate the cube. To avoid these problems, you should set your video player to use an output driver which does not use video overlay. If you use AIGLX, you should use the x11 / xshm output driver. If you use Xgl, you can use the x11 / xshm driver or the OpenGL output driver (which may be smoother and offer more features, such as brightness / contrast control, than the x11 / xshm driver). The way to do this is different for different video players.
- For players that use gstreamer (for e.g. totem-gstreamer), run gstreamer-properties, go to the "Video" tab, and set the video output to "X Window System (No Xv)".
- For mplayer, for x11 / xshm output, add this line to ~/.mplayer/config (and also to ~/.mplayer/mplayerplug-in.conf if you use the mplayerplugin browser plugin):
vo=x11
For OpenGL output, add the following line instead:
vo=gl2
- For xine, go to the settings menu, set your configuration experience level to "Advanced", then go to the video tab and change "video driver to use" to "xshm" for x11 / xshm output or "openGL" for OpenGL output. Alternatively, you can use these console commands. For x11 / xshm output:
perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:xshm|' ~/.xine/config
For OpenGL output:
perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:openGL|' ~/.xine/config
- For Kaffeine, go to the settings menu, select "Xine backend configuration" and in the video tab change the driver to "xshm" for x11 / xshm output or "openGL" for OpenGL output.
- For Totem in Xine mode, run this command for x11 / xshm output:
perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:xshm|' ~/.gnome2/totem_config
Or this command for OpenGL output:
perl -pi -e 's|#video.driver:auto|video.driver:openGL|' ~/.gnome2/totem_config
- For x11 / xshm output in KMplayer, go to Settings -> Configure KMplayer. Then in the "General Options" section go to the Output tab. In this section change Video Driver to "X11Shm".
[edit] 3D-accelerated desktop and some Java/Swing applications
See also Bug #25900. Some Java applications using Swing may not display correctly under Xgl/AIGLX with compiz - the usual symptom is that text is not displayed. A possible solution is to run the following command at a console before launching your java application:
export AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
If this works, you may want to add these two lines to the file ~/.bash_profile (that is, the file .bash_profile in your home directory):
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
export AWT_TOOLKIT
Some people have also reported that this issue is fixed in compiz-quinnstorm, an alternative version of the compiz compositing manager that is used to implement 3D accelerated desktop effects. These packages are available in the contrib media. To test them, you will need to remove the compiz package and install the following packages from contrib: compiz-quinnstorm compiz-manager compiz-quinnstorm-plugins cgwd cgwd-themes csm. Please note that compiz-quinnstorm will not recognise configuration changes made by gset-compiz, the compiz configuration tool launched by drak3d. You must use the new csm configuration tool instead.
[edit] AIGLX and repeat logins
See also Bug #27103. There is an issue with AIGLX which may prevent users from logging out and in again multiple times when using the KDM or GDM display managers (by default, KDM is used).
One way to work around this issue is to force your display manager to restart X on logout.
For KDM you should edit the file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc and check you have in the =[X-:*-Core]= section the following line:
TerminateServer=true
For GDM you should edit the file /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf or /etc/X11/gdm/custom.conf and check you have in the =[daemon]= section the following line:
AlwaysRestartServer=true
[edit] Xgl and multiple user logins
See also Bug #27104. In a separate issue from the one above, there is an issue with Xgl which may prevent switching users (i.e. logging in graphically to the desktop as one user, logging out, and then logging in again as a different user).
If you use KDE with the KDM login manager - the default configuration of Mandriva - you can work around this issue by using this script to log out. Save the following text as a file, for example, logout.sh:
#!/bin/bash rm -f /tmp/.X93-lock rm -f /tmp/.X11-unix/X93 dcop kdesktop default logout
Make the file executable, either with the chmod +u logout.sh command or by using the graphical File Properties dialog. Running this script will log the current user out and remove the lockfiles that prevent another user from logging in, which should allow you to login again with no problems. You can create a desktop launcher that runs the script, for ease of use.
If you use the GDM login manager, you can work around the issue by editing the file /etc/X11/gdm/PostSession/Default and adding the following as lines 5 and 6:
rm -f /tmp/.X93-lock rm -f /tmp/.X11-unix/X93
[edit] 3D-accelerated desktop and KDE shortcuts
See also Bug #25394. When you use the 3D accelerated desktop feature you may find some commonly-used KDE keyboard shortcuts no longer work correctly. This is because the compiz compositing manager used to provide 3D desktop effects does not know how to pass these shortcuts on to KDE correctly. The most commonly experienced problem is that alt-F2 no longer brings up the 'run program' dialog box. To fix this problem, run this command:
gconftool-2 -t
str --set /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/run_command0_key '<Alt>F2' \
--set /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/command0 'dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface popupExecuteCommand' \
--set /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/run_key 'Disabled'
If you wish to reverse this change, run these two commands:
gconftool-2 --unset /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/run_command0_key --unset \
/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/command0
gconftool-2 -t
str --set /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/run_key '<Alt>F2'
A candidate fix (which sets the ALT-F2 shortcut only) has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: compiz-0.0.13-0.20060817.12mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated compiz package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #25394.
[edit] Slow login when using Xgl
See also Bug #26138. Xgl in Mandriva Linux 2007 unnecessarily tries to resolve xauth hostnames on login, in some cases causing login to fail or to be delayed for several seconds. This issue will be resolved by the provision of an updated x11-server-xgl package that is modified not to try and resolve these hostnames.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: x11-server-xgl-0.0.1-0.20060714.10mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated x11-server-xgl package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #26138.
[edit] Other 3D-accelerated software (including games) cannot be run when Xgl is in use
Due to inherent limitations in the way it works, it is not possible to run other 3D-accelerated applications on an X server (effectively, a desktop) that is being accelerated via Xgl. There are two possible workarounds for this issue. The more preferable is to use AIGLX instead of Xgl if your hardware supports it. AIGLX does not have the same limitation. If your hardware supports only Xgl, you can run other 3D-accelerated software on the underlying X server, rather than the one Xgl uses to render the desktop. This will only allow you to run fullscreen software that will not be managed by the running desktop. You can do this by starting the software with the following command, where 'appname' is the command name for the software you wish to run: DISPLAY=:0 appname

[edit] LDAP configuration wizard inverts 'Name' and 'First Name' settings
See also Bug #12581. The LDAP configuration wizard included in the drakwizard package shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug. When adding a user with this wizard, you will be asked for 'Name' and 'First Name'. When the user is actually added to the LDAP database, these values are reversed.
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: drakwizard-3.1-2mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated drakwizard package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #12581.
[edit] LDAP configuration wizard generates invalid directory tree and administrator settings
See also Bug #15214. The LDAP configuration wizard included in the drakwizard package shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug. It generates a default configuration file with the following settings:
LDAP directory tree: hostname LDAP Administrator: cn=Administrator, hostname
Where hostname is the hostname of the machine. These settings are not correct, and cause LDAP to fail on startup with the following error message:
You must enter a valid LDAP directory tree.
To resolve this issue, the string dc= should be added before hostname in both places:
LDAP directory tree: dc=hostname LDAP Administrator: cn=Administrator,dc=hostname
Please report the results of your test to Bug #15214.
[edit] LDAP configuration wizard generates erroneous configuration file (Groups OU)
See also Bug #21698. The LDAP configuration wizard included in the drakwizard package shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 contains a bug. The configuration file it produces defines the groups container with the name ou=Groups, but later on refers to it with the name ou=Group.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #21698.
[edit] DNS server configuration wizard does not generate a working configuration
See also Bug #30936. The DNS server configuration wizard included in the drakwizard package shipped with Mandriva Linux 2007 was not updated to reflect changes in the new version of the BIND server shipped with the release, and so does not generate a working configuration. Problems include bad syntax in the named.conf configuration file, and configuration files not copied to the BIND chroot area.
Please report the results of your test to Bug #30936.
[edit] MySQL: binary logging enabled by default
See also Bug #27132. The default configuration file /etc/my.cnf for MySQL 5 enables binary logging. As a result, every single database modification is logged in binary log files located in /var/lib/mysql and called "mysql-bin.xxxxxx" (where xxxxxx is a number). Binary logging is used for database replication, but isn't needed for common uses and can quickly use a substantial amount of disk space.
To disable binary logging, comment the following line in /etc/my.cnf:
[mysqld] (...) # Replication Master Server (default) # binary logging is required for replication log-bin=mysql-bin
[edit] Amavis fails to scan some messages with error lstat() failed
See also Bug #30536. The package for the ClamAV virus scanning system included with Mandriva Linux 2007 Spring omits a configuration file setting, which can cause the Amavis mail scanning system to be unable to scan certain messages when ClamAV is used as the virus scanner. The required setting in the file /etc/clamd.conf is:
AllowSupplementaryGroups yes
A candidate fix has been uploaded to the /main/testing package repository: clamav-0.90.2-0.3mdv2007.0. If you would like to help test the candidate fix, please read the "Testing Candidate Updates" section, above, for instructions on setting up your system to install packages from the /main/testing repository. Follow these instructions, then install the updated clamav package. Please report the results of your test to Bug #30536. Please note that this update will only fix the issue on clean installations where the clamd.conf file has not been changed (or clamav has not been previously installed). If you upgrade from a previous Mandriva Linux release or if you upgrade from the broken version of the package to the fixed version after having configured ClamAV, the configuration file will not be overwritten: you will still have to fix the problem manually as described above.
